Bayou Body Count: Arguments And Infants
You know what they say: Nothing good ever happens at the club after midnight.
That certainly seemed to be the case this past weekend. On Sunday, for instance, three guys at about 2:50 a.m. were heading out of the Kahlua Disco club at 7600 Dashwood when they bumped into a pair of partiers.
Tempers suddenly flared, police say, and everyone ended up in the parking lot (which is actually the last place you want to take an argument).
You guessed it, after a few moments, someone from the second group pulled out a pistol and started firing, hitting all three of his opponents, police say. The twosome then jumped in a burgundy minivan and sped off. Police are still investigating.
One night earlier, Alexander Torres, Jr. was at the Oasis Lounge on the 7700 block of Irvington. Once again, it was late, well after midnight, when someone dialed 9-1-1.

When the cops arrived, the damage had already been done. Torres, 24, was on his way to the hospital, where he died. Detectives say they later learned that an unknown number of people got into a fight when gunfire erupted and Torres was shot in the head.
And if it's true that nothing good happens at the club after midnight, then it might well be said that nothing good happens at the grocery store after 7 p.m. At least that was the case this past Saturday at Helmer's Food Store at 6417 Helmers.
Police say that a group of men were chatting up a store clerk when a second bunch of guys began antagonizing the first group. Words were exchanged, and one of the men from the second group called for backup.
Sure enough, police say, someone pulled up driving a black SUV and started shooting. A 31-year-old, whose name has not been released, was killed.

It was also not a good week for babies.
Last Wednesday evening, police got a call about a man down and raced over to 3805 Sherwood Lane, where the parents of a 24-year-old woman met them. They told the cops that a relative complained of a foul smell coming from the apartment.
The parents and daughter started looking for the source, police say, and tracked it down to somewhere underneath the bathroom sink. The three then made plans to clean up.
The parents were later told that the smell was from the remains of an infant, police say. Detectives later interviewed the daughter, who said the baby was hers, police say.
Finally, investigators are waiting on the autopsy of a 3-month-old baby to determine if she was killed. The baby's parents found her unresponsive early Monday morning while sleeping in their bed and called for an ambulance. The baby was pronounced dead at LBJ Hospital, police say.
