#Cakegate Guy Drops Lawsuit, Says Whole Foods Didn't Write Homophobic Slur on His Dessert

The #Cakegate odyssey is over.

In April, openly gay Austin pastor Jordan Brown posted on social media a picture of a cake from Whole Foods with "Love Wins Fag" written on it, claiming he had ordered the baked good to celebrate LGBTQ rights and received a sugary homophobic slur instead. Brown proceeded to hold a press conference announcing his intention to file a lawsuit against Whole Foods, seeking damages.

Earlier today, Brown dropped his lawsuit and admitted to making up the accusations.

“The company did nothing wrong,” Brown said in a statement, according to the Austin American-Statesman. “I was wrong to pursue this matter and use the media to perpetuate this story...I want to apologize to Whole Foods and its team members for questioning the company’s commitment to its values."

After Brown initially filed his lawsuit, Whole Foods came back swinging, immediately filing a countersuit alleging Brown's accusations were "fraudulent." The company later released surveillance video showing Brown cashing out with the cake, which it said proved Brown tampered with the box. After Brown admitted his mistake and dropped the lawsuit, Whole Foods also announced that it would not pursue further litigation.

“We're very pleased that the truth has come to light," Whole Foods said in a statement posted on its website. "Given Mr. Brown's apology and public admission that his story was a complete fabrication, we see no reason to move forward with our counter suit to defend the integrity of our brand and team members.”

There are still a lot of questions here. What motivated Brown to do this? Why target Whole Foods? Why cake? Did he still eat the cake? How did it taste? Did he write the icing-slur himself? If so, did he ever go to culinary school? Has he decorated any cakes since? How many other cakes fell victim to his spree? What, if anything, does this conspiracy have to do with Lee Harvey Oswald, Benghazi, the Mayan calendar and Area 51? The world may never know, and cake will never be the same.
