Frank Wilson Survival Watch, Day 4: The County Judge Doesn't Weigh In
How long will the embattled Metro president last? Hair Balls presents today's installment of the Frank Wilson Survival Watch.
1. Ed Emmett won't muddy the Frank Wilson waters. Yet. Along with appointing two members to Metro's Board of Directors, there's no question that the county has a stake in how Metro operates.
So Hair Balls asked where the County Judge stands on all the mess surrounding Frank Wilson.
"[Emmett] wants to let the recently appointed board members get settled and get their feet under them before he wades in and starts announcing what he believes should be done with the current leadership at Metro," Emmett spokesman Joe Stinebaker told Hair Balls in an e-mail.
Stinebaker continued, "He has spoken with the county's appointees to the Metro board on numerous occasions, but wants to allow the city's appointees to get a little further along in their education process."
Survival rating: He's hanging on. Not too surprising that Emmett isn't making any dramatic announcements, but from Stinebaker's statement, it sounds like Emmett thinks something should be done with Metro's leadership.
2. Metro board members are meeting today with officials from the Federal Transit Administration in Washington, D.C. Gilbert Garcia, Metro's chairman, said in a special board meeting last week that the D.C. trip was to basically get a status update on Metro's federal funding.
Metro spokeswoman Raequel Roberts told us that the board members are in back-to-back meetings this afternoon and aren't available to talk. When the board members get back to Houston tomorrow, hopefully we'll know more on where things stand for Metro.
Survival rating: He's hanging on. Like we said, we'll know more tomorrow.
3. Metro light rail = Destroyed in Seconds. The Discovery Channel has this show, hosted by a former football player, that features video clips of things getting blown up or smashed, narrated in a very When Animals Attack-type voice.
Apparently, the Metro light rail was the subject of one of the segments. We're not sure when the Metro show originally aired, but we found it today when an accident attorney posted a clip of it on a Web site. Metro was featured on the show because, according to the narrator:
"It's one of the most accident-prone rail systems in the United States. The reason? All seven and a half miles of it run on city streets where confused and impatient drivers can't seem to stay out of its way."
Survival rating: He's (somehow) safe. It's not good that Houston's rail hits so many cars, but you really can't blame Frank Wilson for all those "confused and impatient drivers."
Update: Meredith Strober, a publicity assistant with the Discovery Channel, tells us that the Metro segment aired on October 22, 2009.
