Friday Night Lights, Houston Style (And Thursday Night Style): Lamar Vs. Chavez

Hair Balls once saw Lamar Redskins gear for sale at a pharmacy in River Oaks, and since then we've been itching to experience what had to be the school's devoted following of fans.
So we traveled to HISD's Barnett Stadium last night to watch Lamar take on the Chavez High School Lobos.

The game was billed as the "biggest game in the program's history" for Chavez, in a game that "could be an instant classic." It was a chance for Chavez to beat Lamar for the first time in the opening game of this year's district play. And the weather was just about perfect for football.

We thought, after a slight letdown at the Yates/Madison game, that we were finally going to see some big-time Houston high school football.

We were wrong.

Friday Night Lights, Houston Style (And Thursday Night Style): Lamar Vs. Chavez

The only way there could have been less people cheering for Chavez is if no one showed up. A few more fans were in the stands for Lamar on the visitors' side, but it wasn't close to our expectations for a school that sells hats and t-shirts at a store in River Oaks.

Also, Chavez's team colors are blue, black and silver. The Lamar drill team should check that out before wearing uniforms that are blue, black and silver.

Reverend Larry Malbro, from Mount Vernon Baptist Church, was disappointed at the fan turnout, too, but he thought the stadium was almost empty because the game was on a Thursday night. We first met Malbro at the Yates/Madison game, and it turns out that he goes to all the games he can, because he likes watching high school football better than college or professional.

"I've been knowing number 12, [Chavez quarterback] Andre Kelly since he was this high," Malbro said, leaning over to hold his hand at his knee.

So it had to disappoint Malbro when Chavez, winning the game in the fourth quarter, ended up losing 27-21 after a late Lamar comeback.
