In The Re-Match, Second Baptist Again Kicks Lakewood's Ass
The battle of the mega-churches is under way as hurricane-relief efforts continue, and it looks like Second Baptist has pulled out to a healthy lead over Lakewood.
In fact, if you had bet on Second Baptist, you probably wouldn’t even need to worry about the spread.
As of 1 p.m. today, volunteers at the Memorial-area church – which is a FEMA point of distribution – had passed out ice, water and food (at least until the food ran out around noon) to 1,458 vehicles and 208 people on foot, Houston Fire Department Assistant Chief Blake C. White tells Hair Balls. (Many of those vehicles may have been shiny Mercedes, and many of the walk-ups may have been sporting Cartier watches and Louis Vuitton handbags, but didn’t Jesus say, “And when the rich have thirst, they shall drink from my father’s 24 oz. Mountain Valley Spring bottle”?)
No organized aid is available at Lakewood, but if you show up there they will give you a nifty list of PODs where you can volunteer. And on the church’s site, you can donate to relief efforts. There’s also an address to mail checks and money orders to. And a number to call to make donations. And two numbers for wire transfers.
Oh, and please note that all checks and money orders should be made out to Joel Osteen Ministries.
Here’s a warm/fuzzy quote from the Lakewood donation page: “Your support is vital to our ministry operations and will allow us to be the hands and feet of Jesus to those in need during this critical time.” What those hands and feet will specifically be doing is not mentioned.
Looks like Second Baptist has won the bragging rights this time. Much as they did during Katrina, as we noted when it happened.
Much appreciation is due the volunteers, HFD personnel and National Guardsmen who are helping out – too bad there’s no money in it.
