Joe Chavez: TABC Agent Gets 20 Years For Raping Girl He Used in Underage-Drinking Sting

Usually when you're accused of having sex with an underage teen, you play the "I swear I thought she was 18" card.

That's a little difficult to do when you're an agent of the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission and you're using a girl as part of an underage-drinking sting. Since underage-drinking stings usually involve, you know, making sure the person trying to buy liquor is underage and all.

We told you about TABC agent Joe Chavez last year when he was arrested; we're only now catching up with the news that he was sentenced by a jury last week to the maximum 20 years in prison. He had entered a guilty plea, perhaps hoping for some live from the Bastrop County jury, but rolled snake eyes.

The Texas Attorney General's office says Chavez convinced a 16-year-old girl to assist him in a sting operation against a convenience store suspected of selling to minors.

Apparently thinking she was enraptured by his TABC manliness, Chavez sent the teen "a sexually explicit image of himself," the AG's office says.

And then, after the sting operation, he sexually assaulted her.

Besides the 20 years for felony sexual assault of a minor, the jury also sentenced Chavez to ten years for felony online solicitation of a minor and one year for official oppression. The trial judge will determine whether the sentences will be served concurrently or consecutively.
