Johnny Romano Skate Jam: World's Largest Skatebording Charity Event
Photos by Taylor Turner
The Jam is the largest and longest running charity skateboarding event in the world, and has donated over $600,000 courtesy of Southside Skate Park to the Make-A-Wish foundation of the Texas Gulf Coast and granted over 100 wishes, over the past fourteen years.
The Woods Family, Zumiez, and other vendors have made considerable donations to the charity every year. Professional skateboarders like James Hardy and others were there for autograph sessions and to get fans to come out and support a worthy cause while jamming to their favorite songs and having fun boarding.
Everything that the vendors at the Skate Jam sold and the money collected from games were also donated to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The emcee of the event announced that everyone was here for the same reason, "All sales and everything that makes money here goes to a damn good cause."
The Skate Jam welcomed skateboarding fanatics to come check out over 100 of the top professional skateboarding talents and expedition crews from around the world. From Bowl Jam Contests, autograph times, spitfire games, awards, and much more, Southside Skate Park also hosted the annual S Games Finals Skate Championships for amateurs during the Skate Jam. There were over 150 boarders from around the world, including places like Japan and Holland. The S Crew does this all around the world and this year, with celebrity judges, brought it to Southside for all to see.
Contest earnings were $2,000 for the winner and another $10,000 awarded by Zumiez. Tickets were $40 at the door to get into the skate jam and see these skaters go board to board in competition. All proceeds and contest earnings were awarded to the winner, who then donated them to the Make-A-Wish Foundation for a good cause.
Not only did the Skate Jam bring out fans and pros, but it was also host to a special guest Tiffany Garcia. Tiffany is a Make-A-Wish kid who says she loves to board, even though she did not bring her board out to the Skate Jam. Tiffany said she came to check things out after the foundation and the skate park invited her. Tiffany's wish is to go to the Bahamas, a wish that she hopes to be granted by the Make A Wish Foundation, but for now she will continue to enjoy boarding and watching the latest tricks.
The official after party featured performances by Chanel Westcoast of MTV, beats by DJ Gonz and host Bun B.
