Juan Villareal: HISD Teacher Pleads Guilty to Distributing Child Porn

A third-grade teacher in the Houston school district entered a guilty plea Tuesday to charges of possessing and distributing child pornography.

Juan A. Villarreal, 52, a teacher at Anderson Elementary in Westbury, has taught in the district for 11 years, but he was out of a job once he was arrested shortly after the current school year began last August.

The investigation into Villarreal began when Beaumont police officers discovered him sharing child porn with a suspect they were looking into.

A search of his home and computers yielded 1,425 images and 277 videos of child pornography, the U.S. Attorney's Office announced. "One of the videos included a known minor child victim performing oral sex on an adult male," the USAO's office said.

Villarreal, who has been in custody since his arrest, told police at the time of his arrest that he had been viewing child porn for five years -- almost half his HISD career.

At the same time, HISD sent home a letter to Anderson parents that said in part, "Federal agencies traced the child pornography to his home computer through Internet activity on a child pornography Web site. The teacher remains in federal custody and has been removed from his duties....At HISD the safety of all the students is top priority. The district takes these charges very seriously and will work closely with law enforcement agencies."

Villarreal, who will be sentenced in May, faces at least five and up to 20 years imprisonment for the distribution conviction and up to ten years for possession. Both charges also carry a possible $250,000 fine.
