Kinky Pig Action

Kinky's Pig is something you'd cast your vote for, seriously.

I've been playing phone tag all week with one Kinky Friedman, whom you might remember as one of the independent candidates for Texas governor. The Kinkster, fresh from his concession speech, is out on a publicity tour for his newest book, The Christmas Pig. So far, he's done Kerrville, Austin, San Antonio, Dallas and today, he's in Houston. Friedman will make an appearance at Borders Bookstore in River Oaks, where he'll sign Pig and chat up fans.

I'll post a full interview with Friedman here on Monday. Friedman and I discussed the election, his new friendship with Guvnah Rick Perry and grudge against liberal Democrats, and whether or not he plans to run again.

And we talked about The Christmas Pig, which, I was a little embarrassed to mention to him, is my favorite Kinky book. After all, this is a "celebrity Christmas book," that Kinky wrote in about a month. But the story, about a mute young boy who sees the future and paints it, a quirky king who commissions said kid to paint the annual Christmas nativity scene, and a talking pig who's thrown in for good measure, is a gem. It's a page turner which somehow manages to mix a little Charlotte's Web with Fellowship of the Ring and comes off feeling like The Princess Bride . (OK, the last one's a movie -- and book, thank you, readers -- yes, but Kinky's book is just so darn visual.)

It's a fluid, charming, downright addictive tale, and I was relieved to hear Kinky say that it's his "best damn book" he's ever written. Wanna check it out? Head to Borders Bookstore, 3025 Kirby Dr. at 7:30 p.m. today. (Call 713-524-0200 for information.) You'll have to buy a copy of Pig to get it signed by the Kinkster, but you won't mind dropping the cash on this wiseass holiday tale.

And don't forget to check back here Monday for more Kinky conversation. — Steven Devadanam
