March Madness 2014: The Tourney in Prop Bets

Let's go...
Let's go...

Come this time of year, almost everyone is filling out brackets. Hardcore fans, casual fans, kids, adults, bosses, secretaries...we all love March Madness!

However, this is also a time of year where degenerates get even more degenerate. Spreads, moneylines, prop bets, futures, exotics...everything is on the menu. It's all fair game.

So in doing my annual post where I try to impart at least a few nuggets of bracket wisdom, I want to make sure I cater to both crowds. So here are all of the March Madness prop bets from bovada.lv, and in making my selections, you should be able to piece together most of my bracket.

Let's go...

Which #1 ranked seed will be the first to be eliminated from the 2014 NCAA Men's Basketball Championship? (If 2 or more are eliminated in same round wagers are No Action.) Wichita State -110 Arizona +200 Virginia +300 Florida +600 PICK: ARIZONA +200. I have two #1 seeds (Virginia, Florida) making runs to the Final Four, and Wichita State getting knocked out in the Sweet 16 by ultra-live 4 seed Louisville. My Arizona pick has as much to do with their Round of 32 opponent as anything. I think at a #9 seed, Oklahoma State (who I have winning their opener, obviously) has way too much of their seven game losing streak in February backed into their seed. Oklahoma State is capable of a deep run in this thing. (And I say this knowing full well Digger Phelps picked the Cowboys to go to the Final Four.)

Will a #16 Seed advance past the round of 64 of the 2014 NCAA Men's Basketball Championship Tournament? Yes +700 No -1500 PICK: NO -1500. It's never happened before, and if you can stomach having $1500 sitting out there at risk, this could be the easiest $100 you make the entire tournament.

How Many #1 seeds will make the Final 4 of the 2014 NCAA Men's Basketball Championship? ½ .. Over -350, Under +225 PICK: Over -350

How Many #1 seeds will make the Final 4 of the 2014 NCAA Men's Basketball Championship? 1½ .. Over +150, Under -200 PICK: Over +150

How Many #1 seeds will make the Final 4 of the 2014 NCAA Men's Basketball Championship? 2½ .. Over +700, Under -1500 PICK: Under -1500. Although -1500 is horrific value on this bet.

What will the sum of the seeds be for Final 4 of the 2014 NCAA Men's Basketball Championship? 12½ .. Over EVEN, Under -140 PICK: Over EVEN. I love OVER on this bet for a few reasons. First, two of the top three teams OVERALL in the eyes of oddsmakers in this field are 4 seeds (Michigan State, Louisville). That's beyond a rarity. Second, the field is pretty wide open this year, so all you need is one #5 or #6 seed to sneak through, and you're probably laughing. Finally, I like OVER because this is my Final Four: Florida, Virginia, Louisville, and NINE SEED OKLAHOMA STATE!

What seed will the 2014 NCAA Men's Basketball Champion be? #1 3/2 #2 4/1 #3 5/1 #4 21/10 #5 25/1 #6 25/1 #7 25/1 #8 20/1 #9 or higher 15/1 PICK: #4 21/10. How strong is the 4 seed line? Well, as we mentioned, two of the top three teams in the eyes of oddsmakers are 4 seeds. You get a better payout on 2 seeds and 3 seeds in this bet.

Which Conference will the 2014 NCAA Men's Basketball Champion come from? Big Ten 7/2 SEC 5/1 ACC 15/4 Big 12 7/1 Big East 6/1 Atlantic 10 20/1 Pac 12 6/1 Mountain West 33/1 American Athletic 5/1 PICK: American Athletic 5/1. I actually have one of those #4 seeds winning it all, the LOUISVILLE CARDINALS! To me, they're the most complete tournament team in the field. I stress tournament to mean that they can adjust to any style and be relatively comfortable in any tempo. They're a top 20 team offensively and defensively, have a go to scorer in crunch time (Russdiculous!), and have a coach who rarely lays an egg this time of year. Also, the #4 seed can only serve to put a bigger chip on their shoulders.

Florida - Will they make the Sweet 16 in the 2014 NCAA Men's Basketball Championship? Yes -400 No +250 PICK: Yes -400. And do so fairly easily. Keep in mind, history says the 1 versus 16 matchup is a given, so you're basically getting these Yes/No odds on a Round of 32 game against the winner of Colorado and Pitt.

Virginia - Will they make the Sweet 16 in the 2014 NCAA Men's Basketball Championship? Yes -300 No +200 PICK: Yes -300. Same thing as Florida, just replace Colorado and Pitt with Memphis and George Washington.

Arizona - Will they make the Sweet 16 in the 2014 NCAA Men's Basketball Championship? Yes -300 No +200 PICK: No +200. I love getting 2 to 1 odds with Oklahoma State in the Round of 32. I think the Cowboys win their first game, beat Arizona, and then win two more.

Wichita State - Will they make the Sweet 16 in the 2014 NCAA Men's Basketball Championship? Yes -200 No +150 PICK: Yes -200. But a potential second round matchup with Kentucky is dicey.

Kansas - Will they make the Sweet 16 in the 2014 NCAA Men's Basketball Championship? Yes -200 No +150 PICK: Yes -200. But with no Joel Embiid, I can see a tussle with New Mexico in their second game.

Villanova - Will they make the Sweet 16 in the 2014 NCAA Men's Basketball Championship? Yes -200 No +150 PICK: No +150. Villanova catches a de facto rivalry game in the Round of 32 regardless of who wins between 7 seed UConn and 10 seed St. Joseph's. For Villanova, it'll either be an old school Big East matchup or a battle for Philly supremacy. Yikes.

Wisconsin - Will they make the Sweet 16 in the 2014 NCAA Men's Basketball Championship? Yes -200 No +150 PICK: Yes -200. But believe me, I agonized for a long time over their second game against #7 seed Oregon. Bo Ryan is a chronic disappointment this time of year.

Michigan - Will they make the Sweet 16 in the 2014 NCAA Men's Basketball Championship? Yes -200 No +150 PICK: Yes -200. Pretty formulaic first two games. Rout over Wofford and routine win over Texas and Arizona State winner. (I picked Arizona State over Texas, for what it's worth.)

Syracuse - Will they make the Sweet 16 in the 2014 NCAA Men's Basketball Championship? Yes -150 No +110 PICK: Yes -150. Syracuse has been very average the second half of the season. Upset alert.

Creighton - Will they make the Sweet 16 in the 2014 NCAA Men's Basketball Championship? Yes -175 No +135 PICK: No +135. I was waiting to pick against Creighton in the Round of 32 before the bracket even came out. Then I saw they would face the winner of red hot Baylor and in-state rival Nebraska in that round, and I got very, very happy.

Iowa State - Will they make the Sweet 16 in the 2014 NCAA Men's Basketball Championship? Yes -120 No -120 PICK: Yes -120. I have the Cyclones going all the way to the Elite Eight. in case you couldn't tell, I love the Big 12 this season. Five of my Sweet 16 are Big 12, including three in the West, which would make that regional the Dan Beebe Memorial Regional.

Duke - Will they make the Sweet 16 in the 2014 NCAA Men's Basketball Championship? Yes -200 No +150 PICK: Yes -200. Although I could see Tennessee giving Duke trouble in the Round of 32.

Will a Canadian born player win the 2014 NCAA Men's Basketball Championship MOP? Yes +1000 No -2500 PICK: No -2500. Last I checked, Louisville doesn't have any Canadian born players.

Louisville - Will they make the Sweet 16 in the 2014 NCAA Men's Basketball Championship? Yes -350 No +225 PICK: Yes -350. And then some!

Michigan State - Will they make the Sweet 16 in the 2014 NCAA Men's Basketball Championship? Yes -250 No +170 PICK: Yes -250. Tom Izzo is about as sure a thing this time of year to at least win a couple games.

Which Canadian born player will average more Points Per Game during the 2014 NCAA Men's Basketball Championship? (All must play at least 1 game for action.) Andrew Wiggins +160 Nik Stauskas +150 Melvin Ejim +140 PICK: Wiggins +160. I'll take Wiggins as he's the one most capable of exploding for 40 points in a game at some point.

What will be the highest margin of victory during the Round of 64 in the 2014 NCAA Men's Basketball Championship Tournament? 32½ .. Over -120, Under -120 PICK: Over -120. Inevitably, one of these #1 vs #16 or #2 vs #15 games gets out of hand.

What will be the highest point total scored by #1 team during the Round of 64 in the 2014 NCAA Men's Basketball Championship Tournament? 95½ .. Over -130, Under -110 PICK: Over -130.

How many buzzer beating shots will occur during the Round of 64 in the 2014 NCAA Men's Basketball Championship Tournament? (Basket must score as time is expiring to win the game, if player can inbound ball after basket is not a buzzer beater. Foul shots do not count towards wager.) 0 .. 5/7 1 .. 2/1 2 .. 6/1 3 .. 10/1 4 .. 18/1 5 .. 40/1 6 or more .. 50/1 PICK: 6 or more, 50/1. Why not? It's the most wonderful time of the year!
