Tom Horan is one of the last of the old-time PR guys in Houston — he made his bones hyping the faux-Vegas glitz of the old Shamrock Hotel.
For the past 15 years or so, he's had a tradition tied to St. Patrick's Day: A week or so before the big day, reporters all over the city receive a flask-sized bottle of Jameson, along with Horan's best wishes.
This year, for the first time ever, someone sent it back.
"The staff at KHOU would like to thank you for your kind gift," a letter accompanying the bottles said. "Unfortunately, company policy prevents us from accepting alcoholic type gifts....Have a wonderful St. Patrick's Day."
As if you could, what with the foine gift of a wee bottle bein' refused.
"It's like the Grinch Who Stole St. Patrick's Day," Horan harrumphed.
Rest assured we here at the Press won't disrespect the Irish like that. -- Richard Connelly
