Drivers merging from I-10 onto I-45 can expect to see one less Lakewood, Ron Carter or Mattress Mac billboard.
(Yeah, we're pretty bummed about it, too.)
The billboard was launched in anticipation of "Word," a group exhibition that opens at Deborah Colton Gallery on September 16.
Says the press release:
Yoko Ono originally produced IMAGINE PEACE for New York City in 2001, responding to the September 11th World Trade Center tragedy. Deceptively simple, with its basic black and white palette, the billboard engages the thoughts of the viewer on an almost subliminal level, inevitably provoking discussion of current events. At a time when movies and videogames often draw audiences into seductive worlds of warfare, Ono offers us a refreshing reversal of perspective.
We're all for mixing up the urban landscape, but we do have to wonder how "refreshing" this message actually is. Really, isn't imagining peace, like, so 1969? How many people are going to change their minds after flying by these words at 65 miles per hour?
Maybe Ono should've updated the message a little, gone with something like
or even something simple, like
