Paralyzed Man Commits "Suicide by Cop" in Montgomery County, Sheriff Says (UPDATED)
A handicapped man led police on a highway chase, tried to throw his wheelchair out on the road during it, and finally committed "suicide by cop" when he shouted "Shoot me!" and then reached for a possible weapon, the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office says.
The chase began around 1 a.m. this morning on the North Freeway when an officer tried to pull the vehicle over for a traffic violation.
The driver took off and began throwing objects, "believed to be some type of narcotic," out of the window, MCSO Lt. Dan Norris said.
"During the pursuit, the suspect remotely opened and closed the cover over the bed of the truck and would move a boom with a wheelchair on it out over the roadway and at times lowering the wheelchair down so the chair would bounce on the roadway and off the side of the truck," Norris said. "The wheelchair never dislodged and remained tethered to the boom."
Spikes were laid across the road and blew out three tires. The vehicle came to a stop just south of The Woodlands Parkway.
"When deputies and officers approached the suspect, the suspect opened the vehicle's door yelling that he had a gun, and yelled 'shoot me,'" Norris said. "The suspect reached down, retrieving something from under the driver's seat. A deputy with the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office fired at least three rounds from his pistol, striking the suspect in the torso."
The man was taken to Woodlands Hospital and later died, Norris said.
Police say they are looking for his next of kin and have not released his name, only describing him as "a paralyzed mid-40's white male."
Update: The man has been identified by the MCSO as Bryan Keith Carnes, 44, of Willis.
