Please to Kindly Eff Off: Texans Apparently Both Polite and Potty-Mouthed on Twitter
Fail or win?
One side effect of social networking that is rarely discussed by the public at large is the massive amounts of data gathered every day about our habits online. Every time you publish something on Twitter or Facebook or, God help you, MySpace, it is cataloged, not by some evil secret government (that we know of) but by the very social networks you use.
What is fascinating is, when organized, that data can tell us a lot about our habits and those of our neighbors. Recently, the project Twitter Heatmap combined Twitter searches for the phrases "Good morning" and "Fuck you," spun some Web wizardry and combined them with Google maps to display some fairly interesting trends. What we learned is that Texans like to say both...a lot.
People in Lubbock sure like saying "good morning."
Judging from the above table, the folks in Lubbock sure are chipper in the morning. Granted, this is just one time frame from a single day, but it is telling that so little of the rest of the country is as positive it is going to be a good day as our friends in the Panhandle region.
"Fuck you" is popular throughout most of central Texas and, shocker, Dallas.
As for cursing, well, that's where most of the rest of the state takes over, particularly the Dallas area. Again, just a snapshot of one time during one day, but looking at it over time, the pattern holds up.
It's interesting to note that Houston, despite being such a large area, is only on the edge of the "fuck you" zone. Maybe we prefer different curse words here or maybe we just don't curse as much...nah, that can't be it.
For now, those are the only two results Twitter Heatmap has recorded. I'd love to see some more just to see how Texas fares, like "Dallas sucks" or "Austin hipster."
