Jolene McMaster and Cynthia Neely like to sit in the dark — and scream! The co-directors of the Silver Screams Film Festival, McMaster and Neely have been fans of horror films for years. Like other fans, they were dismayed that they could only see their favorite flicks on television at Halloween time or at the occasional midnight movie. The answer to their problem was obviously a film festival, and this year’s promises to be a chilling success.

Stephen King’s The Night Flier (1997), a rarely seen tale of a vampire who flies his plane from small-town airport to small-town airport leaving mayhem in his wake, and the original Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956), which details the terrors of monsters from space taking over human bodies, are both highlights of the two-day festival. And for all those purists in the crowd, there’s Bride of Frankenstein (1935), the creepy, scary love story gone wrong (really, really wrong), Clive Barker’s Candyman (1992), Stuart Gordon’s Re-Animator (1985) and Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho (1960).
Winners of the “Little Shorts of Horror” competition will also be screened. And this year, as an added fright, Silver Screams will also host an art exhibit by Clive Barker (yep, the Clive Barker — his paintings are only slightly less disturbing than his films) and H.R. Giger, the creator of Alien. The fun starts with a kick-off party on Friday, just before the 5 p.m. screenings (it includes a scream contest, so get your pipes ready). Saturday's screenings start at 11:30 a.m. Studio Movie Grill, 8580 Highway 6 North at West Road. For information and tickets, call 713-647-7709 or visit www.silverscreams.org. $8 to $30. - Olivia Flores Alvarez
