Security Guards Punched Students Who Rushed Field After UH Victory
Raise your hand if you don't want to be punched by university security.
In case you missed it, this weekend was a big freaking deal for the University of Houston, whose football team won the school’s first conference title in a decade. To mark the occasion, some students rushed the field at TDECU Stadium on Saturday.
Most made it to mid-field to celebrate with the Coogs up close and personal. Some, however, were chased, tackled and even punched by guards working with the firm hired by the university to handle security at the stadium.
A bunch of videos went up on social media after Saturday’s game showing guards arbitrarily picking off students who’d jumped down from the stands to rush the field. As the Houston Chronicle reports, the guards with Contemporary Services Corporation, which has provided security for UH athletics, chased some excited fans ten, even 15 yards.
Outraged by the videos, including one that shows a CSC guard punching a fan in the face, UH President Renu Khator on Sunday announced that the university has “suspended all relationships” with CSC.
CSC’s chief operating officer, Devan Schulz, told the daily that the company is investigating the incident. "Training is provided to CSC employees for responding to such situations," Schulz wrote. "Any actions by CSC personnel that contradict our training, CSC's other requirements, or the law, are not condoned by CSC and will not be tolerated."
We get this is relatively new territory for UH — a competitive team, a winning coach, a conference title and bowl-game eligibility. Perhaps the guards weren't trained on how to handle a field-rushing scenario. Hopefully the next batch of guards can receive training on how to deal with excited fans in ways other than chasing, tackling and punching them in the face.
