Spring Concert Series at Discovery Green Announced
Cut from the same cloth as Party on the Plaza comes this year's concert series at Discovery Green . If you haven't visited the downtown park since it opened last April, you're missing one the greenest and absolutely most beautiful facets of our town. In the spirit of our newly spendthrift society, the free concerts are a godsend to folks looking for a family-friendly event or just a place to chill before their nighttime barstool residency. Not to mention they start earlier in the evening, taking full advantage of Daylight Savings Time. Local booker and "King of the Oldies" Allen Hill was put in charge of curating this year's entertainment. Hill aims to create the same atmosphere as the long-running POP, adding, "With Discovery Green, we have the opportunity to create the same vibe and experience but with tons more grass, dancing room and an incredible breeze coming off the lake that is as cool as the crowds."
Hill also gets excited at the idea that younger Houstonians will be getting their first taste of live concerts, you know, before they get tainted by mosh pits and beer showers. Many locals reminisce about POP and their first times seeing bands like Reverend Horton Heat and others on Jones Plaza. This spring and summer, Hill has groups like Creole zyde-cowboys Geno Delafose & French Rockin' Boogie (May 7); resurrected local roots-rockers the Hollisters (May 14); Grammy-winning Denton polka kings Brave Combo (May 21); Austin flamenco shredders Del Castillo (June 4); and longtime local jam-lords Moses Guest (June 25) rolling onto the Green every Thursday. One the more interesting performers is Susan Cowsill, the youngest member of real-life Partridge Family the Cowsills. On June 11, she will perform the Beatles' Revolver note-for-note in its entirety. Previously, she has covered albums by Elton John and Sly & the Family Stone.
