State Rep. Debbie Riddle's Pre-Filed Bills: A Sampling
Monday was the first day to pre-file bills for the upcoming session of the Texas Legislature, and Tomball State Rep. Debbie Riddle famously camped out to get first crack at things.
She filed nine bills. Not all of them deal with the Brown Menace attacking the U.S. from across the Rio Grande, so she's obviously not a one-trick pony. The one that got all the attention, of course, was a clone of Arizona's controversial law allowing cops to check immigration status more or less at will. But we shouldn't deprive Riddle's other bills of their moment in the sun.
Among the highlights:
House Bill 17: Relating to the creation of the offense of criminal trespass by an illegal alien and to certain procedures for arresting illegal aliens for committing that criminal offense. "Their entire existence is criminal trespass," we hope the bill reads, more or less in full, by the time it gets through committee.

HB 22: Relating to information regarding the citizenship and immigration status of public school students You want a free lunch? Prove you're legal, Diego.
HB 21: Relating to reporting by state agencies on the financial effect of providing services to illegal immigrants We need to know exactly how much it costs an emergency room to save the life of someone who's dying and doesn't have a driver's license, so we can stop doing that ASAP.
HB 16: Relating to requiring a voter to present proof of identification Because voter fraud is just so, so rampant. In the minds of Republicans.
And somehow, we get the feeling she's only just begun.
