Swine Flu Closes Three HISD Schools, Episcopal High -- And All Of Fort Worth ISD (UPDATED)
HISD has announced two schools have closed until further notice because of possible -- but not confirmed -- cases of swine flu.
Harvard Elementary and Hamilton Middle School, both in the Heights, are the schools.
"Late last night the City of Houston Health Department informed HISD Superintendent Abelardo Saavedra of two probable, but not confirmed, cases of swine flu and advised the district to immediately close both schools as a precaution," HISD spokesman Norm Uhl said. "The principals of both schools sent out automated phone messages shortly after midnight to parents and staff in order to give them as much notice as possible."
He also sought to assure parents that the disease isn't necessarily deadly: "Parents and staff were advised that if anyone in their household develops any flu-like symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue that they should seek medical treatment. Swine flu can be effectively treated by doctors."
The Chronicle also reports Epsicopal High in Bellaire is closed at least through the weekend.
The student at Episcopal who tests showed had swine flu is already on the way to recovery, officials from the school said.
If you think HISD is panicking -- and we wouldn't blame you if you did -- take a look at Fort Worth ISD. They're closing the entire district, even without a confirmed case of the disease. The 144 schools, the 80,000 students, all are out of business until at least May 8.
Add Lyons Elementary, near Tidwell between I-45 and the Hardy Toll Road, to the list.
