Terry Grier Reverses Course, Recommends That Lanier Continue as a Vanguard, Not an IB Magnet
Houston ISD Superintendent Terry Grier, who yesterday changed his mind about tackling magnet school funding this year, also has reversed course on Lanier Middle School and is now recommending that Lanier remain a Vanguard school -- rather than becoming an International Baccalaureate magnet, according to e-mail he sent to a parent Sunday.
On top of that, Lanier will get more money from the district in Grier's recommendation. "The proposed IB level of $214,000 will be increased to over $300,000. Vanguard centers are funded at a higher level that IB magnet programs. Of course, all of the changes require board approval," Grier wrote in an e-mail to a Lanier parent.
The change came after members of Grier's staff met with Lanier's principal, who told them "Lanier would prefer to be a Vanguard center versus an IB magnet; while continuing to use the IB curriculum for its students," Grier wrote.
"By moving Lanier to a Vanguard center versus an IB magnet, the school's funding level will also change. The proposed IB level of $214,000 will be increased to over $300,000. Vanguard centers are funded at a higher level that IB magnet programs. Of course, all of the changes require board approval. Lanier currently receives $120,000 in magnet funds, said Grier.

Grier said he "asked staff to correct Lanier's funding numbers on our proposal. That has been accomplished and the change will be reflected on our web site later this afternoon or tomorrow." He also wrote: "I apologize for the confusion and funding mistake."
The new proposal doesn't alter how students are admitted into the Vanguard program and doesn't affect their transportation system, Grier said.
