That's Game

The theme for April was sports, and a rookie stepped up and took home the prize. Newcomer Danielle Riley of Westchester Academy of International Studies gets first place for her action shot of a softball player leaping in the air to avoid being taken out by a runner.

Second place goes to Yasmeen Smalley of Bellaire High School for her anticipation-filled snap of a football team running out on the field.

Kingwood High School's Mariah McWhorter gets third for her verdant shot of a four-year-old going after a softball. McWhorter was also the winner of the Reader's Choice Award, collecting the most votes from online viewers. She'll get two certificates for her double play.

This time around we've got two honorable mentions. One goes to Taylor High School's Willie Xu for his basketball photo, and the other goes to Magnolia High School's Tyler Brackenbury for his scooter photo.

All the winners will receive bookstore gift certificates. The theme for the month of May is camera-phone photos. The subject doesn't matter, so long as you follow basic rules of photojournalism and make sure the results are captured between checking voice mails and typing out text messages.
