The Mets' Strange and Usually Awful History in Houston
Mr. Met doesn't like Houston, except for a few big games.
The New York Mets came into the majors the same year as the Astros, but ESPN is somehow choosing to commemorate the New York team's 50th anniversary with a running blog on the team's history.
Which does seem to be jumping the gun a bit, but hey, it's New York.
The Mets are in town for a series beginning tonight, so a recent entry looked at the team's history in Houston. Everyone thinks of the epic Game Six in the 1986 NLCS, of course, but there were other tidbits worth remembering:
-- The 1969 Amazin' Mets who shocked the world with a Series title? That year they went 0-6 in Houston, giving up 37 runs in those games and only scoring 13. (Overall, they were 2-10 vs. the `Stros that year.)
-- Tom Seaver's last game as a Met before his earthshaking (for Mets fans) 1977 trade to the Reds as beating the Astros. (The blog calls it his "final game as Met," but he returned for a one-year stint later.)
-- The first Astros-Mets series in the Dome ended when a Met outfielder lost a flyball against the roof. "Mets management claimed the ballpark's air conditioning system was rigged to blow out when the Astros were at-bat, and in for the visitors' turns," the blog says.
And, of course, there were the 1986 drunk and disorderly arrests of four Mets at Cooter's, an episode which spawned T-shirts that read "Houston Police - 4, New York Mets - 0."
The Mets got their revenge later that year, in the aforementioned Game Six.
Anyway, we're guessing plenty of good seats are available at the ol' ballpark tonight, given that both teams are currently last in their respective divisions.
