Two Unidentified DWI Victims of Bizarre Accident, Bayou Body Count Nos. 180-181
Two men involved in a fender-bender called the cops, but as they were waiting for officers, they were struck and killed by a second vehicle driven by a drunk driver Saturday morning, HPD says.
The names of the two male victims -- one 64, one 45 -- were not released pending notification of family members. The incident occurred in the 11200 block of the Northwest Freeway about 1:45 a.m. Saturday, HPD says.
The two victims were in a blue Chevrolet Silverado when they were hit from behind by a black Ford Explorer, police say. As the drivers exchanged information, the men in the Silverado found cause to believe the Explorer driver was drunk, cops say.
"[S]o the driver of the Silverado got back into the truck to call police," HPD says. "As he was on the telephone, a black Lincoln Navigator struck the two vehicles involved in the first accident. The 64-year-old male passenger from the Silverado and the 45-year-old male driver of the Explorer, who were outside the vehicles, were struck during the second accident and died at the scene."
The Navigator was driven by Aaron Chavira, 33, who has been charged with two counts of DWI causing the death of the two victims. The investigation is continuing and further charges may be filed.
