Unsolicited Advice for Silda Spitzer
So this blog is about pop culture, and this post is gonna be about politics, but in my opinion, politics comes pretty close to serving as our pop culture, most of the time.
I want to write about Silda Spitzer, the wife of the ex-governor of New York, Eliot Spitzer, who resigned after it came out that he hired prostitutes (just a little recap for the under-a-rock crowd). I know the scandal has somewhat blown over, but Silda Spitzer’s face keeps popping up in television, looking spaced out and shocked as she stands behind her man while he apologizes and, ultimately, resigns his office.
I can’t get her out of my mind.
Do I think a man who visited a prostitute is any less capable of running a country or a state? No, not at all. I have mixed feelings about whether or not Eliot Spitzer should have resigned.

But I’m 100 percent certain that Silda Spitzer should resign him.
Now since the scandal broke, I’ve overheard several people commenting on the fact that she graduated from Harvard Law. As if this was reason enough for her to leave. Hell, what does Harvard Law have anything to do with it? If she worked at McDonald’s and was the wife of some john who was visiting tricks on the side and depleting their grocery money, would that give her any less of a right to leave? No, it wouldn’t.
Leaving him has nothing to do with the fact that she graduated Harvard Law and she’s nice-looking and from a good family. It has everything to do with this:
He cheated on her with a prostitute only a few years older than one of his own daughters.
He hypocritically fought against prostitution and sex workers while employing them himself (probably the tackiest thing about this whole event). He’s a hypocrite of the highest order even if he has proven himself to be brilliant in other respects. And hypocrites suck.
It wasn’t a one-time, he got drunk, he’s so very sorry deal. It was an ongoing habit. (Is “habit” what you call visiting prostitute? I guess.)
He publicly humiliated her by hauling her out in front of the press and then not mentioning her, referring vaguely only to making amends with his “family.” Seriously, dude…were you serious?
After she put her own career on hold (perhaps willingly, I grant you) so that her husband could pursue his own, this is how he thanks her.
Ms. Spitzer, it’s your choice, and no one can tell you what to do but you, and no one knows what’s going on in anyone’s marriage but the two people involved and blah blah blah. But I can’t help but say what I really think, which is simply this: Silda, leave the rat bastard! – Jennifer Mathieu
