(UPDATED) Pregnant Teen Seeks Restraining Order Against Abortion-Thirsty Parents
(Update: The judge in the case granted the girl a temporary restraining order preventing her parents from "threatening to use any type of physical force or means...regarding any decision she may make regarding her pregnancy."
No date has been set for a hearing on a full injunction.)
Here's one you don't see every day: A pregnant 16-year-old is seeking a temporary restraining order against her parents, whom she's accusing of violating her constitutional rights by pressuring her to get an abortion.
The girl, nine weeks pregnant and identified in court documents as "R.E.K.," is represented by the Austin-based pro-life group Texas Center for Defense of Life. She's accusing her parents of threatening her with an "ass whoopin'" and worse, if she doesn't terminate the pregnancy. For good measure, she accuses her dad of beating people up in front of her, and her mom of frittering her nights away at the local tavern. We smell a sitcom!
The girl claims that, even though her boyfriend's parents have agreed to care for the baby, her parents are willing to disown her if she doesn't get an abortion. According to the suit, the girl's mother gave her three options: "1) continue to live in misery at the house, 2) have the abortion and tell everyone it was a miscarriage, or 3) she would 'wash her hands' of R.E.K. and have R.E.K. leave."
The girl also claims that her mother has had four abortions and has threatened to "slip R.E.K. an abortion pill through deception."
Texas Center for Defense of Life President Greg Terra stated in a press release that federal law holds that "a teenage girl has the absolute legal right to make her reproductive choices. This includes the choice not to have an abortion, even against the strong coercion of the parents. If the girl lives in Texas and chooses life, then we will stand with her in a court in support of that choice."
The girl's father denied the allegations to KTRK and said he believes someone is pulling his daughter's strings. That's of course what we'd expect any dad to say, but we can't help wondering if there's something to it -- there seems to be much more going on here, and we plan on looking into it. Somethin' don't smell right. We'll keep you posted.
