Veterans' Group Will Spruce Up Jesuit School Campus This Weekend
More than 80 veterans from across the country will renovate the campus of Houston's Cristo Rey Jesuit College Prep this weekend to kick off a six-month volunteer campaign for a group called The Mission Continues.
Mayor Annise Parker will open the weekend with a special welcome for the veteran-volunteers, according to the organization's press release.
The press release states that "the volunteers will rebuild the school's bleachers, plant new gardens and landscape grounds, and remove an outdated performance stage. The site improvements will support the school in its mission to empower students of all backgrounds to reach their full potential."
The school's interim president, Dan Walsh, stated in the release that "The Mission Continues' veterans are living examples for our students that leadership, determination, and service to others offer a path to empowerment and success. We're excited and truly honored to welcome The Mission Continues to the Houston community."
The group's service to Houston includes the launching of a local veterans service platoon, led by former U.S. Army medic Brian Wilson. Wilson is quoted in the release as saying "My fellowship helped me reconnect to that same fire and passion that I felt while serving my country, and I wanted to make sure other veterans have a chance to experience that -- even if just for a weekend. We're excited to start recruiting and identifying a long-term mission that will make a difference to people in Houston."
According to its website, The Mission Continues was founded in 2007 by Navy SEAL Eric Greitens. When Greitens visited wounded Marines at Bethesda Naval Hospital, he found that "without exception, each Marine expressed an unwavering desire to continue serving his country, even if he could no longer do so in the military."
We're glad to hear that these folks who served the country will help serve a community in Houston.
