"Wetback Wednesdays" Now "Whiskey Wednesdays," Irish Have Not Protested Yet

Whiskey defuses a crisis

The Draft Pub in Huntsville said it would stand tall against criticism of its

"Wetback Wednesday" special

, but it has changed its mind.

In an odd column defending its decision not to cover the issue, the Huntsville Item says the bar has decided to change the name to "Whiskey Wednesdays."

Great. Now the Irish will be pissed off. Depending on whether the special includes Jameson's or Bushmills, hordes of Catholic or Prod Micks will descend en masse on Huntsville.

But they're probably get so drunk they won't protest, because the Irish -- especially Catholic former altar boys who spent 12 years in parochial school -- are such alcoholics they can be easily distracted.

Smart move, Draft Pub.

By the way, here's the Item's rationale for not covering the brouhaha:

The Item was not part of a pack of journalists, which included KBTX-Bryan and sister station KHOU-Houston, that covered the controversy over a decision by the Draft Bar to promote its weekly Mexican beer special with the slogan "Wetback Wednesdays"...Past and current owners say they had heard no complaints over the slogan. But an SHSU student told us some students were offended, that she herself had complained to the bar, and that an SHSU professor had told his students to boycott the Draft Bar.

An organized boycott? That would be news. But as far as we could determine, that wasn't the case.

So remember, racists: as long as no one organizes against you, you're safe from the Hunstville Item.
