Will Houston Get Its First Real Cold Front This Weekend?
Those 80-degree days are in our not-too-distant future.

Last week, I brought up the fact that our weather should be moderating as the days grow shorter and cool fronts begin pushing southward. Well, looks like we might not have to wait as long for our first blast of seasonal cool air as originally thought.
This time of year, cool fronts begin to dip south and bring with them Canadian or even, as we get into winter, Arctic air that funnels much cooler temperatures into the U.S. The flow of air in the upper atmosphere across the southern U.S. is normally west to east, which pushes cooler air eastward before it reaches us. Once a strong enough weather system is able to move all the way south into the Gulf, that pattern tends to change or at least moderate, allowing us to get some cooler weather.
Beyond that, the roller coaster of warming trends followed by cold fronts is something we live with all the way through the spring. Since this year will be dominated, like last year, by La Niña, a weather pattern over the Pacific Ocean that tends to bring warmer, drier air to the southeastern part of our country, those ups and downs could be substantial.
Last year, we had some 80-degree days and some 20-degree days. As the saying goes, "If you don't like the weather in Texas, wait."

Even with that late-season blast of cold air, we still had a slightly warmer and drier winter than normal and that should be expected to continue, the drier part a depressing thought considering our ongoing drought.
For this week anyway, look for our first real blast of cooler air to come over the weekend, possibly (and that's a BIG "possibly") bringing with it some rain. Beginning Sunday, look for temperatures in the 80s during the day and 60s at night. There is even a hint of a few days worth of rain in a couple weeks, but let's just try to be happy with the cooler weather.
