The Burmese Come to Houston

Chinlone, in which players kick a small ball made from dried palms over a net, is one of the most popular sports in Burma and other parts of Southeast Asia.

Children sometimes wander the apartment complex on their own as they did in refugee camps, where the community made sure they were safe.

The Burmese community at the Sun Blossom apartments on Ranchester Drive has so far expanded to include more than 100 families.

Among the first obstacles for new arrivals is finding a rice cooker. Until then, they use a frying pan.

Phe Bu and eight of his friends say they were misled into taking a job in Alabama and then threatened when they tried to come home.

Burmese soldiers tried to arrest Phe Bu Reh when he was discovered sending food to starving rebels.

Scott Poteet, an employee with Interfaith Ministries who lives at Sun Blossom, has organized evening English classes there. He teaches adults in one room while refugee volunteers teach children in the next.

Poteet came to watch but ended up a guest of honor at the Karen celebration.

Red and white threads are tied around the wrist of a Burmese infant to signify unity for ethnic Karen people now scattered across the globe.
