Resham and Sharan Gahunia, a mother-daughter team, run Raja Sweets these days...

...since Resham's husband Joginder Gahunia passed away in 2002.

Customers line up at Raja, which was the first Indian sweet shop in Houston. The sweets are still made fresh here every day, even after 25 years.

Kaiser Lashkari moved to Houston to get away from the cold. He now owns and runs a Pakistani restaurant, Himalaya, to great acclaim.

Aku Patel opened one of the area's first Indian-owned businesses, Karat 22. Twenty-five years later, he's one of only six jewelers in Houston who are authorized Rolex dealers.

Yatin Patel has operated India Grocers for more than 20 years, but his successful business sells far more than just Indian groceries.

Colorful saris and vibrant fabrics are a common sight in the Mahatma Gandhi District, where sari shops were just as instrumental as Raja Sweets and Karat 22 in spurring growth.
