Larry Joe "Long Ball" Miggins carries his family's long hardball tradition into the future by taking it deep in the past.

At 73 years old, second baseman Phil Holland went eight-for-eight for the Babies, then left the game behind the wheel of a flashy red Corvette.

One of the Boerne White Sox tallies his team's first run. In vintage base ball, players must ask the umpire, or "Blind Tom," if they may register their score. If permission is granted, they ring the iron bell and the run is chalked on the board.

In game two of the three-game round-robin, the Blind Tom resorted to a parasol to beat the sweltering Katy heat.

Under the auspices of Houston's chapter of the Society for American Baseball Research and alongside Dr. Bill McCurdy, Mike Vance is poring over the archives for ancient local baseball lore with a rigor never seen here before. In his endeavor to read every baseball article in all Houston papers from 1861 on, he is now up to 1904.
