John Wells, a self-described moderate prepper, stands at the door of his shipping-container house outside of Terlingua, Texas. Wells keeps a blog about living off the grid, called The Field Lab, that he updates daily.

Wells bought his land outside Terlingua in 2007. Originally from New York, he got sick of the rat race and decided to take on a life of self-sustainability.

Wells is constructing a greenhouse out of shipping containers, which he also uses for rainwater collection. He eventually hopes to grow enough food to feed himself and to live off $10,000 a year.

Wells approaches a free-ranging longhorn named Denise, which belongs to a neighbor who lives several miles away.

The Colandos, who founded their company, All Energies, in 2009, hope to eventually raise goats for milk and grow all their food on their ranch.

Near the Corazon Mountains, Casey and Sara Colando build and sell alternative-energy sources such as solar panels and engines that run on wood. They're interested in the prepper lifestyle because they want to preserve the skills of self-reliance.
