Army Specialist Jose Alfredo "Freddy" Velez...

...and Army Pfc. Andrew Velez became the first brothers to die in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan — Freddy in combat in Iraq, Andrew by his own hand after his elder brother's death.

Monica Velez cleans a statue dedicated to her brother Freddy at Fort Hood, the home to his unit, the 2nd Battalion of the 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division. Freddy Velez was killed by sniper fire in Iraq in 2004 while defending wounded members of his squad.
