  • The Famous And Not-So-Famous Of HISD's "Prominent Alumni" List

You probably don't realize it, but the Houston school district's website has a page dedicated to prominent alumni, listed by high school.Unfortunately, many of the "prominent" alumni are politicians, especially current and former HISD board members. Any definition of "prominent" that includes HISD board members is probably a little too loose for our taste, but we guess the people who put the list together like to keep board members happy. With that in mind, here are Seven Things About HISD's List

  • It's Easier Than You Think To Get Shot By A Bellaire Cop

Unarmed 23-year-old black man Robbie Tolan was shot in his own driveway last Wednesday in Bellaire. The bullet pierced his lung and lodged in his liver, where doctors say it will likely remain for the rest of his life. The shooter was Sgt. Joseph Cotton, who evidently thought Tolan's 2004 Nissan Xterra was a stolen vehicle, although no one is saying exactly why he thought this. City officials aren't saying anything concrete on the matter; no one seems to know exactly what happened. They certainly

  • Houston's Eccentric Super Gyros

The Ekko's gas station and Greek deli on Richmond and South Rice founded by former airline pilot Steve Bouboudakis was the subject of this week's Café review. But Steve's gas station gyro stand is hardly the only wacky Greek venue in town. Houston Greek restaurants are beloved both for great food and eccentric personalities.

  • Sole Of Houston: Airline Drive, Part 1

The longest walk in the history of the Sole of Houston requires the longest piece. This being a blog and all, we have decided to break it up into three installments. Coming today, tomorrow and Thursday in this tale of 22-plus miles of concrete, mud, and fairly cold weather: The fending off a potential psycho killer and the drunkest crack dealer who ever lived, the most sinister strip mall in all of Greater Houston, a sprawling, festive Mexican mercado, a drink in a historic off-the-radar nigh

  • Robert Tolan's Lawyers Aren't That Impressed With Bellaire's Proposed Racial-Profiling Study

As the Houston Chronicle reported today, the city of Bellaire has hired an outside consultant to review whether there's evidence of racial profiling in who the police department pulls over on traffic stops. The announcement came in the wake, of course, of the police shooting of resident Robert Tolan, gunned down by Bellaire cops in his driveway for no discernible good reason. After the incidents minorities came forward to talk of being singled out by police in the lily-white suburb. The Chron quot

  • The Tolan-Bellaire Shooting Story Is Going National

Isiah Carey's Insite reports the Robbie Tolan/Bellaire police shooting story is going national.Bryant Gumbel of HBO's Real Sports was in town to interview Tolan, who was shot in his driveway by Bellaire cops. Tolan's father is former major leaguer Robert Tolan.Carey says Gumbel interviewed the entire family, and the family is now going into media lockdown until the show airs. When that happens -- supposedly next week -- they'll hold a press conference.Gumbel also found out what the rest of the l

  • Baseball Player Shot by Police Calls for Bellaire Mayor's Resignation

Robert Tolan, the minor league baseball player shot by Bellaire cops in his parents' driveway on December 31, called for Bellaire Mayor Cindy Siegel's resignation at a press conference today. "I would hope that Bellaire's residents are appalled and outraged," Tolan told a crowd of about 100 people who gathered in a Meyerland ballroom. "I would indeed like to see her resignation." Tolan and his brother were returning to their parents' home when two officers pulled them over, for what Bellaire

  • Bellaire Expert Finds No Racial Profiling, Stunning Nobody

When the city of Bellaire announced it was bringing in an expert to study whether its police force engaged in racial profiling, the lawyer for the kid whose shooting spawned the move was unimpressed. "Certainly, it's a PR move...I don't have a whole lot of confidence any of this will turn out to be legitimate," lawyer Geoffrey Berg told Hair Balls. "It's a PR move that was done because the ordinary people have let the city of Bellaire know that this situation is intolerable, and that's forced th

  • Metro's Getting Right On That Sleeping-Driver Complaint (Kinda)

Photo by sean_mcgeeIt's now been two weeks since Metro passenger Ania Howard happened upon a snoozing, erratic bus driver on her Bellaire route, but she hasn't gotten any answers yet to her pretty basic question of "What the hell was going on?"She and her daughter took a bus to the Bellaire Transit Center and went to transfer to another bus. The door was closed and, as fellow travelers stood and waited, it stayed closed.Because the driver was asleep, as the accompanying (blurry) picture after th

  • Tofu & BBQ

Jang Guem Tofu & BBQ House in the giant Asian shopping center at 9896 Bellaire, is one of two Korean "tofu and barbecue" restaurants in town. Tofu Village, located in the shopping center across the street, also specializes in this unlikely-sounding pair-up. But once you try some fiery "soon tofu" and hot bulgogi, you'll stop laughing. "Soon tofu" (soon tubu jjigae) combines a spicy broth, your choice of meat or seafood, and creamy soft tofu chunks. The soup comes to the table boiling hot and b

  • You Can't Protest Against The Communists Without A Marching Band

Photo by Olivia Flores AlvarezThe Global Center for Quitting Chinese Communist Party held a protest yesterday in the Bellaire area.  The group's name pretty much says it all; they want Chinese people to quit the Communist party. The Divine Marching Band (that's them in the blue and white, with the musical instruments), the GCQCCP, and the Coordinating Committee of the Vietnamese Political Parties in Houston were part of the protest, as well as a scattering of Vietnamese that served in the U.

  • Civil Suit Against Bellaire Is Coming No Matter What Happens With Indictment, Attorneys Say

Photo by John Nova LomaxAs Hair Balls reported earlier, Bellaire cop Jeffrey Cotton was indicted for the December 31 shooting of Robbie Tolan.George Gibson and Geoffrey Berg, Tolan's attorneys, announced that the Tolan family will be filing a civil lawsuit, regardless of the outcome of the criminal case against Cotton. Gibson refused to give a timetable for the civil suit, but said it was coming "soon" and would enable them to obtain even more information on the events of the fateful night than

  • Two Thumbs Down For HISD's Televised Board Meetings

Photo by daveyninSomehow we missed the moment last week when the HISD board decided to enter the 1980s and televise their board meetings, something we've written about before. But the Bellaire Examiner sucked it up and sat through it. Color them unimpressed with the district's efforts, which keeps off-air anything remotely interesting: The capsule review of Houston ISD's first televised board meeting last Thursday is two thumbs down. It was neither good TV nor good public policy. Viewers were pu
