  • Harris County Mental-Health Court Still A Ways Off

After hearing about a recently-approved mental health court for felony offenders, a Katy woman -- who wished to remain anonymous -- was thrilled because she thought it would work perfectly for her 17-year-old son. He'd been in and out of jail since last summer, after originally being arrested for assault. Calls to the Harris County Constables were made by the mother when the boy went into a fit of rage at her house. The woman hoped to have her son taken to Ben Taub Hospital for an evaluation, bu

  • Bayou Body Count: Nudity, Crack Pipes & A Double-Murder-Suicide

The big news this week in Bayou Body Count is the three dead family members League City police are investigating as a possible murder-murder-suicide. Lewis Cantrell Jr. and his wife Gayle Cantrell were found shot to death in their living room on the 2900 block of Chinaberry Park Lane. Lewis Cantrell III, 26, joined them on the floor, a pistol next to his body. Two of the Cantrells' other adult children were in the home when the shooting occurred Wednesday evening. As soon as they heard gunfire,

It was the case of a handyman gone wild. Harris County deputies began investigating the murder of Elizabeth Ann Williams, 66, after her body was discovered inside her home at 3618 Treaschwig on March 28. Williams had been stabbed and beaten. On Monday, detectives say, they finally got their man. News reports say Bruce Dennis Triplett, 50, was arrested at a motel near Mercury and I-10 and charged with Capital Murder. • Bayou Body Count: Nothing Good Comes From A Naked, Gun-Toting Man

Houston police officers at the Northeast Patrol Division substation got more than just a shock Tuesday when a car wildly crashed through the facility's security gate. They ended up in a shootout in which the driver of the car was killed. According to a mix of police and media reports, officers from Aldine ISD were in a high-speed chase with Tony Johnson, 29, who was reportedly driving erratically and holding a gun to his head. • The Chevy Cobalt: Not So Safe After All

There's nothing wrong with the Chevy Cobalt. It's an affordable little car that gets pretty good gas mileage on the highway, but is it really worth killing over? According to Houston police, the answer appears to be yes. Huu Khanh Phung, 55, was in his silver-colored Cobalt near the intersection of Cullen and Almeda Genoa in south Houston at about 12:15 a.m. Wednesday morning when suddenly a man jumped out of a minivan and approached Phung. • Bayou Body Count: Weekend Leftovers, Including River Oaks

During the past few days, Houston-area police and sheriff's deputies have dealt with an unusually high number of murder-suicides. Sunday nearly capped off the week with another. This one, however, was thankfully less successful and had the added element of attempted patricide. Eugene Hawk, 59, and his 21-year-old son, Raymond Hawk, were at their home at 3437 Ella Lee Lane on Sunday afternoon when they started arguing, police say. When the elder Hawk called police, his son yanked out a gun

  • Bayou Body Count: Never Trust A Man With A Hatchet

Throughout history, the term "hatchet man" has meant different things. In the 1880s, it was slang for a Chinese hired assassin. In the mid-1900s, it was used to describe a journalist who assassinated the character of a public figure.Today in Houston, it means something much simpler: someone who assassinates a man with a hatchet. And according to the Houston police, one of them is on the loose. On Monday morning, several workers at a business park at 5562 Gasmer were in the parking lot when the

  • Bayou Body Count: A Stench At The Airport

George Bush Intercontinental Airport may not be on the same level as mythic Mafioso burial grounds such as JFK in New York or the airport in Newark, N.J., but it still finds a stiff every once in a while.Last week, airport police got a call about a terrible stench coming from the parking lot of the D terminal. And as we have learned here at Bayou Body Count, a foul stench coming from a parking lot can only mean one thing: a body.Sure enough, police tracked the smell down to a Ford Focus parke
