  • The Rally at City Hall to Protest Proposition 8

Hundreds of people gathered on the steps of Houston City Hall this afternoon to protest the passing of Proposition 8, California's constitutional amendment taking away the right to marry for same-sex couples. Along with the passing of other anti-gay measures across the nation, Prop. 8 made November 4 a day of mixed emotions for many of the progressives in attendance, who say they went to bed ecstatic about the election of Barack Obama but woke up the next morning to find out not everything had

  • The Osteens Dare To Face Larry King Again

Once again, Joel and Victoria Osteen have entered the lion's den, the vicious place where only the brave come out unscathed -- The Larry King Show.As difficult as it may be to believe, they had some merchandise to hawk Monday night. In this case, a new book by Victoria.Under the relentless questioning of King, we learned that a) the pair will host the first-ever non-baseball event in the new Yankee Stadium, a "Night of Prayer" in April; and b) Victoria has the most frozen "smile" seen outside of

The gays haven't exactly been pleased by Barack Obama since he chose Christian conservative Rick Warren to give the invocation at his inauguration. But Obama's inauguration parade will be the first to have an openly lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender group -- the Lesbian and Gay Band Association -- marching in the parade proper. And three Houston Pride Band members will make up part of the 177-person marching group.Local Kevin Taylor is excited about marching in the parade. He played a previ

  • Even Transsexuals Need To Pee Somewhere

If you're a transsexual and you gotta pee, there are at least 21 locations in Houston where you won't run into any problems - at least according to safe2pee.org, a website that lists 1,848 transsexual-friendly bathrooms in 476 cities. Hair Balls tried to get in touch with the person who started the site, but we haven't heard back. But in the FAQ section, ze writes:    "So the story goes something like this: Back in Fall 06 there was a really bored queer. Ze had a lot of extra days

  • Guerrilla Gay Bar: In And Out At The Union

Illustration courtesy wikipediaAs we told you last week, the "guerrilla gay bar" concept was coming to Houston. It did this weekend, and caused a ruckus. The GGB phenomenon simply consists of a big group of gay people going to a straight bar for the night. Friday night, the lucky bar was the Union Bar in Midtown.Result: Gay people turned away, a Facebook page titled "Union bar Houston -- We Will Not Go There" and a bar owner who says he's been deeply misunderstood.Teh gheys' account: Patrons sta

  • Peace Befalls The Gay Guerrilla War

Photo by Ava LoweryThe Great Gay Guerrilla War appears to be over...for now.As we reported last week, gay Houstonians were banding together to target one "straight" bar and flood it, part of a phenomenon that's happened in LA and New York. The picked out the Union Bar in Midtown, and results were complicated.Gays were saying that as many as 100 of them were left outside in the rain; the Union Bar people said they had no room for more and emphasized their gay-friendliness.Now, peace has been decl

  • A Small Colorado Town Becomes "Capital of Transsexuals" And Houston Hears About It

Photo by Olivia Flores AlvarezMore than three years ago cinematographer/director PJ Raval heard about a small town in Colorado that was "the sex change capital of America." Intrigued, he contacted the doctor, herself a transsexual woman, and began a conversation that resulted in a two-and-a-half year film project, Trinidad. "I had never heard of this town," Raval told Hair Balls after a Saturday night screening here in town. "Then I read a couple of articles saying it was a town of transsexuals

  • Drinking Pepsi Means You Support Gay Orgies, Totally Reasonable Texan Asserts

Is Pepsi in bed with the gays? That's what former Texas Republican Party Treasurer and General Counsel Gina Parker Ford believes. Hair Balls knows this because Ford sent us a commentary detailing her outrage over a recent episode of Family Guy that "promote[d] homosexuality, gay orgies and also slander[ed] Christianity." Also, apropos of nothing, Ford makes sure to include the line "The Griffin family's dog, Brian, made critical and derisive statements about the Bush administration."Ford, who ru

  • Driftwood, Texas -- Not A Gay Mecca, But Maybe An Inspiration

Photo courtesy Imfromdriftwood.comNathan ManskeImfromdriftwood.com, a blog devoted to posting true stories about gay people, by gay people, caught our eye when Patrick from Galveston posted an entertaining story last week. Apparently, high school teachers in Galveston can't tell the difference between homosexuality and African-American heritage. The blog is a little more than two weeks old, launched by Nathan Manske who was born and raised in the tiny Hill Country town of Driftwood. "When I was
