  • Balls Deep In a Hands Up Flame War/Caption Contest

Noted local music scene provacateur Jacob Calle, who is fond of bicycling down Westheimer or strolling hurricane-tossed beaches in a bear costume (above), as well as many other semi-hazardous activities, is once again stirring up trouble in a most hilarious fashion - although, it should be pointed out, he's not exactly the instigator this time. According to Rocks Off's undercover source, whom we trust implicitly, a certain singer for a certain local noise-punk band swiped Calle

  • Talking With Air Guitar Master Bjorn Turoque

For the past six years, Dan Crane, aka "Bjorn Turoque" has been the preeminent ambassador for the world of air guitar. He retired from competition in the Air Guitar World Championships in 2005 and made a lateral move to being the touring roadshow nightly MC - or the "Master of Air-emonies," as he calls himself. The world of competitive air guitar actually goes back to the early '80s in Sweden, when a few metal fans began performing in front of folks, and the phenomenon soon reached the States in

  • Houston Remembers Green Day, Back In the Day

Photos by Rachelle Mendez and Matthew JuarezSaturday night, one of the most polarizing bands of the past 20 years rolls into town. Since its 1994 mainstream breakthrough, Dookie, Green Day has been dividing fans and critics alike. Some damned the trio for leaving their punk-rock roots behind at 924 Gilman for the glamour of MTV videos and catered backstages. Others championed them for bringing a youthful sense of humor to the dour grunge-saturated rock scene of mid-'90s. The success of Dookie

  • Houston Music Fight Club, Round 2: Bryan Jackson vs. Jacob Calle, Bun B vs. B L A C K I E, Beau Beasley vs. Justin Nava

In last week's Houston Music Fight Club, we pitted six of Houston's brightest-shining musical diamonds against one another in a sort of cruel Internet death match. The only blood drawn was the dark crimson blood of laughter that...yeah, we need to work on our metaphors. Anyhow, we came up with three more semi-local celebrity cage matches. We hope that this actually catches on in real life, so that one day it can be sold to pay-per-view for the rest of the world to gawk at. Finally we will have a

  • Westheimer Block Party News and Notes

This weekend's Westheimer Block Party is already going through some minor scheduling changes, just less than twenty-hours away from the time Bryan Jackson cracks open his first Modelo on Taft. Facebook and MySpace (yeah, we know) have been awash the past two days with changes to the lineup and set times. A recent Facebook status update from WBP sponsor Free Press Houston said this: "I don't know when your band is playing. Bands keep on trading slots like trading cards. It is what it is." FPH
