Houston-area bluesman Earl Gilliam, who turned 79 Tuesday, was hospitalized earlier this month for a partially collapsed lung. He's home and recovering now, but still unable to perform. However, his birthday show with the Earl Gilliam Blues Revue, originally scheduled for last Friday, will proceed as scheduled tonight minus Gilliam, but with his fellow veteran local bluesmen Sherman Robertson and Texas Johnny Brown sitting in. Some of the proceeds from the door and the tip bucket will

  • This Week in SXSW: Katy Perry Kisses the "Lake of Fire"

There's now less than a month to go until we here at Rocks Off throw sobriety and sane living to the wind at this year's SXSW festival. This past week we learned of a boatload of new stuff about the weeklong liver-damaging voyage in March, so here goes... The list of bands keeps growing and growing, but we have noticed that some of the events are not as extravagant as years past. Many festivals, including the Vans Warped Tour, have scaled down their theatrics for the sake of saving cash. Th

  • Aftermath: One Wild Weekend

Craig Hlavaty The Imani School Student Jazz Ensemble Craig Hlavaty Erykah BaduRocks Off is still in the very early recovery stages from this weekend, which was one of the most satisfying musical whirlwinds he's been sucked into in quite some time. He started off Friday evening at the Arena Theatre (his new favorite local venue) for Erykah Badu's retro-futuristic benefit for Houston's Imani School. The local private academy's jazz ensemble - no member was over age 13 - ev

  • Local Album of the Week: Little Joe Washington's Texas Fire Line

Little Joe Washington Texas Fire Line www.dialtonerecords.com One of the easiest jobs in music has to be producer of a Little Joe Washington album. Make sure he shows up at the studio - itself no small feat, though not as difficult as it used to be - turn on the recording equipment and get out of the way. On his second album for Austin's Dialtone Records (following 2003's Houston Guitar Blues), the blues flows so effortlessly out of Washington's guitar it's hard to believe any of these 14 s

Here they are, folks. You nominated 'em, we mulled 'em over and sorted out the stuffers, and now the 2009 Houston Press Music Awards ballot is set. Normally Rocks Off would say something cute like read 'em and weep, but since we've been listening to almost nothing but '80s hard rock and new bands that totally sound like '80s hard rock (Low Man's Joe, The Answer, Charm City Devils) for the past couple of days, we'll just say this: Eat 'em and smile. Just kidding. We know this is serious stuff, an

Olivia Flores AlvarezWord has reached Lonesome, Onry and Mean that Little Joe Washington will be on hand tonight when local blues rocker John Egan takes the stage. And Washington will have his guitar with him, if you know what I mean (wink, wink). Egan, who was featured in the Chronicle's Sunday Zest section this week, has been playing out more lately after a hiatus of a year or so, and he's refreshed and working at the top of his game. The last time he played Volcano he broke out an amazing cov

Cary Godshall Well, it wasn't a very crowded field, but we have a winner in our ZZ Top lookalike contest: Cary Godshall, who sent in this picture of a friend of his. (Bonus points because he looks like ZZ Top today and not circa Tejas.) Cary wins a four-pack of lawn tickets to Friday's ZZ show at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion with Aerosmith. Congratulations! Speaking of, today's Live Nation "All In" special is expanding last week's package of lawn ticket, parking, service fees, hot dog

  • HPMA: We Have Some Winners: Little Joe Washington, Cornbreadd, Flying Fish Sailors

Chris Gray Umbrella Man got the HPMAs off to a rousing start with some heel-kicking, toe-tapping zydeco gospel - after they cleared off the cables so hobbled singer Kam could get to center stage on her Rascal-like scooter. Then the first round of winners was announced... Best Folk: Flying Fish Sailors. FFS' Jay Lee almost took his own picture onstage. Best Guitar: Little Joe Washington, who we couldn't seem to find, but managed to be front and center when his name was called, then serenaded

Thanking a multitude of Houston music royalty. Beetle really is a sight to behold, and about a minute fraction of the cost of a McCartney ticket.Best Bassist: Chris Applegate from indie-poppers Mechanical Boy. Photos by Chris GrayUmbrella Man As Maureen McGovern once sang, there's got to be a morning after. And it's about as pleasant as you imagine it is. It's not even that Rocks Off is hung over (much), it's more that after Thursday night's Houston Press Music Awards ceremony, we literally left it all on the field. The tank is empty. Even Jackson Browne has no idea how spent we are. Even so, we'd be lying if we said we didn't have a good time at the awards. Or that we're not proud as a peacock tha

  • A Musical Guide to Post-Secession Texas: Houston and "Brazoria"

The final installment of our Five States of Texas project brings it all back home, to the new state of Brazoria, encompassing all of Southeast Texas from the Brazos Valley to Sabine Pass. Patron Saint: Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown. A master of rock and roll, country, Cajun/Creole, blues and jazz, no one area musician sounded more like Southeast Texas. That he spent his life moving all over the area, on both sides of the Sabine, only serves as evidence in favor of one of our geographical hypothe
