  • Lonesome, Onry and Mean: The Death of Honky-Tonk? (Part 1)

  • Tonight: Justin Townes Earle at McGonigel's Mucky Duck

Honky-tonk blues youngun Justin Townes Earle, 26, hits McGonigel's Mucky Duck tonight. Rocks Off called him up last week to ask about last year's first round of tours behind debut release The Good Life, his early hip-hop influences, his new record and how he'll handle a venue with no room to dance. Rocks Off: Your sound really bridges this gap between old fans of country and their kids. I mean, country music kind of went to hell and your sound reminds a younger generation of the honky-tonk s

Justin Townes Earle at Tuesday's Cactus Music in-store Photos by Craig Hlavaty Nothing could really ruin a Justin Townes Earle show - not even the worst venue setup in town. That handsome, rail-thin cowboy owns the stage as if trying to transform you back to the days when hardened souls put on a smile and played drinkin' and dancin' music for a seated, sober crowd. (More on that later.) Earle has a personality that fits his honky-tonk, ragtime, '40s-'50s country sound. Every tune was int

  • SXSW Update: Watch Out for Devo; Peter, Bjorn & John; Justin Townes Earle; Hungry Villagers and More

Devo on the BBC's Top of the Pops 2 With the big bad final band announcement coming next week, all is quiet on the SXSW front. For now. This past week was slow, with the biggest names confirmed being Devo, Cursive, Peter, Bjorn & John, and Justin Townes Earle. Devo will be closing out the BMI showcase March 20 at the Austin Music Hall, with (fingers crossed) one or two other shows yet to be announced. More than likely we see those guys playing at the huge annual Vice maga

  • Can't Get It Out of My Head: Kleenex-Core with Justin Townes Earle's "Mama's Eyes"

I will be the first to admit that when it comes to music, I get misty at points. I guess it's the sentiment of a song, if it lines up with something that I could never intimate to someone else. Love, death, remorse, all the biggies that get that lacrimal gland going in our everyday lives. I have even frequently wondered if it's some evil recipe in the chords and sounds that makes me turn into a bald and tattooed mass of nerves. Whenever a song makes me tear up, I get all angry at the artist.

  • Lonesome Onry and Mean: Good Trouble for Hayes Carll in 2008

We freely admit we are homers, as big a fans of Hayes Carll as Milo Hamilton is of the Astros, but the Press isn't the only media outlet in the country impressed by Carll's first Lost Highway album, Trouble in Mind. The album, which featured the Americana Music Association's song of the year, "She Left Me For Jesus," was Amazon.com's #1 country album, R&R Americana album of the year, and Amazon's #9 album overall. It also scored a #2 in the annual poll of No Depression writers, as well as a #2 i

  • How About Some SXSW Day Parties? A LOT of SXSW Day Parties?

We here at Rocks Off are only about a week away from chafed inner thighs, weird Japanese punk bands puking in hotel pools and sweating out our morning mojitos while walking to an art space off 4th Street. South By Southwest is now only a week away. It was all fun and games in December when we were posting our little suppositions of who would be playing, but now this shit is serious. In addition to all the nightly mess, SXSW is also a great place to get loaded on the cheap during the day. N

  • Aftermath: Kevin Welch and Dustin Welch at McGonigel's Mucky Duck

Photos by Harley C. Pitts This was not the usual Mucky Duck opener, some member of the street team with a guitar and a desire to hang with rock stars. Dustin (son of Kevin) Welch stunned the sparse crowd at the Duck last night from the first note of "One False Move," the brilliant opener to his new album, Whisky Priest. While the graying crowd had mostly come to hear the father, young Dustin took advantage of his six-song set to wow some new fans into his corner with a strong show that includ

  • No, It's Not Too Early to Start Posting About the Pogues, As a Matter of Fact...

A small band of Irishmen frequent Lonesome Onry and Mean's local waterhole, and they are all abuzz about the arrival of the Pogues at House of Blues October 29. Led by the charismatic and erratic Shane MacGowan, the Pogues set the music world buzzing when they burst onto the London scene in 1982. Their brilliance lay in the combination of Irish traditional music and instruments with the politics and the aggression of the punk movement. While at the beginning they mostly covered old Irish songs,

  • Lonesome Onry and Mean: The Clancy Brothers, or the Pogues of the '60s

Wonder what the Pogues show Thursday is going to look like? Here's our guess... "I had the good fortune to meet Liam Clancy of the Clancy Brothers once and while talking with him over a cup of tea I mentioned my affection for the Pogues to which he replied, 'The Pogues are a cross between the Clancy Brothers and the Sex Pistols...with five teeth between them.'" - customer review of the Pogues' If I Should Fall From Grace With God on Amazon.com The Clancy Brothers - Paddy, Bob, Liam, and Tom - a

  • Lonesome Onry and Mean: The Pogues' "Fairytale of New York" and the Tragic Ballad of Kirsty MacColl

Lonesome, Onry and Mean has never hidden our distaste for Christmas music. So if we were ever called on to choose our favorite Christmas song, the Pogues' "Fairytale of New York" would win hands down. We can still remember the day - we were still Pogues virgins - when the lyrics, waffling between an aching level of poetic sentimentality and the utter down-and-out drunken surly hilarity of a marital spat ("It was Christmas eve, babe, in the drunk tank") finally penetrated the cranial area and we

  • No, We Haven't Forgotten About That Other Guy Playing House of Blues Thursday

Amidst all the rum, sodomy, and lashing going on this week about the Pogues hitting House of Blues Thursday, it's easy to forget that they have a pretty stellar opener warming up the crowd. Hmm, kinda reminds us of another Irish band that brought a really kick-ass young band with them a few weeks back. Exceptt we don't think Glenn Beck quotes Justin Townes Earle lyrics on his radio show. Earle will open for the Pogues tomorrow night, despite being felled by a leg injury he suffered late last

  • Aftermath: Justin Townes Earle, Gaining on His Dad and Lightnin' Hopkins at House of Blues

Photos by Craig Hlavaty It seems every time Aftermath encounters Justin Townes Earle live, the guy has peeled another layer off himself revealing another astounding bit of his promise. Barely three years into his career, Earle is seemingly moving at an accelerated rate, even if the casual listener or viewer can't quite discern what it is that's shaping up. Opening for the Pogues Thursday night at the House Of Blues, Earle came out flying solo. His sideman Cory Younts left a few weeks back to
