Photos by Robb Walsh Forgot the whipped cream for the pumpkin pie? You might take the opportunity to check out the latest in grocery stores -- the new mega-HEB at Bunker Hill and I-10. It's only 130,000 square feet -- the humongo-HEB in Pearland is slightly bigger -- but it's still the biggest grocery store I've ever seen. The day I stopped in the place had some amazing specials for the grand opening sale--like lobsters for $8 a pound and leg of lamb for $4 a pound.

  • Thrift Store Cowboy: Garth Brooks, Sonic Youth and Yaz

Location: Salvation Army, 3620 Broadway, Pearland Thrift stores are a museum of random genius. Where else can one find a faded D.A.R.E. t-shirt and a pair of soiled leather pants? Each trip is a chance for magic. Rocks Off spent some time at the Salvation Army out in the badlands of Pearland last week, on a mission for music. One afternoon he found a vinyl copy of the Nuggets compilation, and his fifth copy of Sgt. Pepper. Increasingly, this location has become a goldmine for compact disc ca

  • Pearland Gets The State's Newest Superfund Site! Take That, Pasadena!

There's an ugly mess of chemicals in the groundwater on the south side of Pearland. The contamination is severe enough that the abandoned tank farm has become the latest addition to the state's Superfund Registry. This is no surprise to nearby residents, some of whom are being given bottled water because their wells are contaminated. That state has been investigating complaints at the site since 1987 and have identified high levels of lead, trichloroethene and other chemicals in the groundwate

  • Think Houston Radio Sucks? Try KACC's Lost Fidelity

Photos by Craig Hlavaty Last week, we railed on the big boys over at the Eagle and the Arrow for perpetrating hours and hours of Billy Joel and the Eagles on the ears of Houston. It seemed to us that between those two fighting for the same audience, it was in fact the listener who was losing. But we didn't take into account the excellent work that is going on down Highway 35 every Friday afternoon on KACC (89.7 FM), Alvin Community College's radio station also known as "The Gulf Coast Rocker." • Openings and Closings

This week features not only restaurant closings and openings, but reopenings as well. The first of those, as expected, was Cafe Le Jadeite (1952 West Gray), which reopened this past Monday. Despite the fact that the name and decor have remained the same, the owners and the menu have changed. B4-U-Eat reports that in addition to a revamped Chinese-American menu, it also offers a sushi bar in the lounge area. Also reopened is longtime Italian favorite Luigi's (2328 Strand St.) on Galvest

  • Who Wants To Be A Contestant On Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?

The producers of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire are coming to town Friday today to audition contestants for the show. Our Craig Hlavaty has already gone down this road before; here's his tale and some tips on how to get picked.Back in the summer of 2005, when I was slinging dough for Domino's and studying for a law degree, I was coerced by my dear old mother to go to try out for the syndicated version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. At this point the Millionaire phenomenon had run its course. I

Brett Floyd and Floyd Landry are partners in Floyd's Cajun Seafood and Steakhouse (1300 East Broadway, 281-993-8385), which recently opened in Pearland. "We opened the Floyd's in Webster in 2004, then another one in Beaumont in 2006, which had been a Don's Seafood for 38 years," says Brett Floyd, "and finally we found this building, which used to house Zydeco's and already had a Cajun image, so it didn't need much. There is a large customer base in Pearland and Friendswood. The area has grown so

  • Aftermath: Archgoat, Blaspherian and Thorn Spawn at Walter's on Washington

Photos by Craig Hlavaty This week has been one of many firsts for Aftermath. Sunday night, we attended our first drunken Tejano show at an icehouse in Pearland while visiting the parents. It was an eye-opening experience, full of balls-out accordion breakdowns and Freddy Fender covers that reminded us of our Hispanic-American roots, even if we are only a quarter. Thursday night, we hit up Walter's On Washington for our first-ever black metal show. To outsiders, the genre is corny and ensconced i

  • A Chat with David Luna of Shade

Chef David LunaDavid Luna helms the kitchen as executive chef at Shade (250 W. 19th St., in the Heights), which was named top New American restaurant in Texas by the Zagat survey. Who were your cooking inspirations?Funny you should start with that question. My grandmother's funeral was today and she was definitely a great influence. She lived on a farm in the Valley. She usually had cabbage on the stove. Poached chicken was common. She always made a caldo with whatever ingredients were

  • Inside Pearland's Mystery Mansion

Photos by Katharine ShilcuttIn an up-and-coming neighborhood in Pearland off Highway 288 and Southfork, two nearly identical mansions sit abandoned in adjoining 15 acre lots. The weeds have grown high around the entry gates to one; the other never even had gates built and sits behind a padlocked chain link fence. There's no landscaping around either one. In fact, they look as if someone dropped two gaudy River Oaks mansions into a cow pasture. And perhaps strangest of all is their sheer size:

  • Food Fight: It's All Greek to Us

This week's food fight was determined by our Twitter followers to be Battle Gyro. And because we don't want them to have all the fun, we're letting our readers decide which two restaurants in Houston will do battle this week. The easy money is on Niko Niko's, or even Al's Quick Stop as the dark horse. But instead of choosing the obvious choices, we want to make sure there isn't a gyro place out there that you feel has been horribly and undeservedly ignored. Is there a Greek place in Pear

The man was arguably one of the biggest musical influences in He Said's life. Welcome back to Five Spot. Every Friday, we'll examine a recent bit of music news and, sometimes awkwardly, tie it to a bit of Houston rap. It's five videos and occasional cussing. Send tips to introducingliston@gmail.com. After you interview somebody in preparation for writing something about them, there are always things that you want to mention that get left out of the article because of flow or space restrictions or whatever. It's the nature of the situation, we suspect. When we interview
