  • Standing Up For Jenna Bush's Dignity

There's a new "reader representative" at the Houston Chronicle -- Jim Newkirk, who's been at the Chron and the old Post for many years. His predecessor (save for an interim), James Campbell, was not exactly known for sticking his neck out on matters. Newkirk, however, has weighed in on an important matter and found that the readers are right!! About something utterly inane, silly, and the epitome of a mountain made out of a molehill.

  • Is Obama's New Family Dog Coming From Houston?

The saga of the Obama family dog has made the entire nation forget the fact that they soon will be out of jobs, to a degree. The new first family is committed to adopting a rescued dog; an Obama daughter has allergy problems so the process of choosing a pet has become complicated. Now comes word that the lucky dog might just come from Houston. The Examiner cites a brief news report from Dallas about a family up there that was trying to adopt a "Labradoodle," which frankly is a word we hope never to

  • At Last: Beyonce Serenades President & Mrs. Obama

Beyonce stepped back into her Cadillac Records character Etta James to sing "At Last," and sing the hell out of it, for President and Mrs. Obama's first dance at last night's HD Neighborhood Inaugural Ball in Washington, D.C. It's hard to imagine either a better singer or song for the occasion - sorry, Etta - especially the line "I found a dream that I could speak to/ A dream that I could call my own." Cadillac Records, which by the way is excellent, is due on DVD March 10.

  • Living In W's Hood

Josh Harkinson used to write for us here at the Houston Press before he decided that living in San Francisco was somehow a lifestyle upgrade. Now he writes for Mother Jones, continuing his stellar career of raking muck.It turns out that Harkinson grew up just six blocks from where George and Laura Bush will be living, the exclusive Dallas neighborhood of Preston Hollow. (Frankly, we were completely unaware of Harkinson's exalted roots, or we would have watched our table manners better

  • The Bush Twins' Real Letter to the Obama Girls

Did you hear how the Bush twins, Jenna and Barbara, recently sent an open letter to the Obama girls, offering up advice for surviving life in The White House? Now, to be honest, I thought their original letter was a truly sweet and lovely gesture, and I actually think the Bush twins have turned out to be quite mature and generous young women, but dang if the pop culture whore in me can't get snarky about this, too. I had to wonder what a more private letter - not posted in The Wall Street J

  • A Missing Gasp In Last Night's A Bronx Tale

Michelle Obama, Chazz Palminteri, A Bronx Tale and the American Dream all collided yesterday during opening night of Palminteri's one-man show. A Bronx Tale, based in part on Palminteri's life, shows a kid named Calogero growing up in a tough New York City neighborhood during the 1960s. Pulled in one direction by his honest, hard-working father, and pulled in another by the local mob boss, the kid has some hard choices to make. One choice, however, seems to be pretty easy for Calogero: He falls

  • In Honor of Michelle Obama and "Shortsgate," the Best Ass Songs of All Time

In a year when the biggest news stories aren't about war or the environment but a mentally unbalanced woman having a litter of children and the death of a creepy pop singer who hadn't put out a decent album in 25 years, it should come as no surprise that so many people would be up in arms about First Lady Michelle Obama's outrageous decision to wear shorts on Air Force One. On a trip to Arizona. In August. Frankly, we wish more Presidential spouses had gone this route (rumor has it Bes
