  • Under the Volcano Calls Out the Rodeo

Under the Volcano has announced new bookings for March. Owner Pete Mitchell is launching what he hopes to turn into an annual month-long series to run during the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. "I haven't come up with a name for it yet - the Anti-Rodeo Series, the Real Country Series, something like that," says Mitchell. "You'd think the Rodeo would at least have one token country music day in a whole month, but all they've booked is the same old tired, stale country-radio acts or st

  • This Year's Rodeo Scandal: Diversity, Or The Lack Thereof. With Dueling Memos!

This year's rodeo brouhaha -- there usually is one -- surrounds the alleged lack of diversity of the event's staff, vendors and performers.State Sen. Mario Gallegos has filed a bill calling on the rodeo to open its books and get better about being inclusionary; local ctivist ben Mendez has circulated an e-mail calling for protests and listing grievances. The rodeo has responded, at great length. Some of this is inherently silly -- arguing whether Hispanic entertainer Little Joe got paid enough for

  • The Rodeo's Schedule Ain't What It Used To Be

Alright, so blogging has caused us to pay a little more attention to the rodeo than we usually do, which isn't difficult to achieve, given how much attention we paid to it in the past. But what's up with the gap in scheduling? We thought these things were etched in stone: Go Texan Day, parade, and then you open up the damn rodeo and get it on.Now Go Texan Day's Friday, the parade's Saturday, and the rodeo's closed Sunday and Monday.Explain yourself, rodeo honcho Leroy Shafer!!!"For many years, th

We had palate cleansers (pickles, crackers and green grapes) and water at the ready. Cameras were clicking and video was running. A microphone was on each of the three round judging tables. It was picture perfect. The wind picked up, blowing napkins and judging slips all over the place. It also airlifted the plate of the judge

Photos courtesy Houston Livestock Show and RodeoA lot of good things went down at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Friday night, but Solange Knowles' performance was not one of them. The songstress paled in comparison to veteran singer Gladys Knight, who went on after Solange's 1960s- and '70s-inspired, mess of a set. In keeping with the theme, her band was decked out in hot-pink Beatlesque suits. The backup singers donned throwback hairdos, and their girl-group choreography was
