  • Grimaldi's Pizzeria Now Open in Sugarland

The long awaited Grimaldi's coal oven pizza location in Sugarland's First Colony mall has finally opened. Grimaldi's original location in Brooklyn's trendy DUMBO (down under the Manhattan Bridge overpass) neighborhood is legendary for its coal oven crust and fresh mozzarella cheese topping. The Brooklyn pizzeria was called Patsy's when I started eating there, but there are several unrelated Patsy's around Manhattan and evidently the owners decided they needed a unique name in order to expand.

  • Lonesome Onry and Mean: Ben Mallott at McGonigel's Mucky Duck

www.benmallott.comWith its outrageous cowboy boots and fringed pant legs, the cover of Sugar Land native Ben Mallott's Look Good, Feel Good had just enough of the bells and whistles to make me think this could be another Texas music wannabe floating along on his Undecided/General Studies degree and daddy's money. But there was also some ironic thing at work, and we all know those Texas music doofuses don't do irony. I'm relieved to tell you it was obvious from the first song that Mallott

  • Some Thoughts On The Chronicle Cuts: So Long, Suburbs

(Note: For a while, this item was posted with the wrong byline -- it's by Steve Olafson, not Richard Connelly, and always has been. Thanks, and sorry.)The layoffs at the Houston Chronicle cut much deeper into the editorial side of the newspaper than the announced company-wide 12 percent reduction that was announced by publisher Jack Sweeney. By the count of newsroom workers who survived, 27 percent of the paper's editorial staffers were let go yesterday. That amounts to 90 employees, they said

"SWING LOW AND CARRY ME HOME" By Mechanical Boy from Michael Fodera on Vimeo. It's about time for Rocks Off to head off to the bunkhouse for some much-needed R&R, but first here's a few final tidbits that have recently come to our attention. Mechanical Boy just released its first video, "Swing Low and Carry Me Home" (above) and heads off on tour after its June 5 show at Fitzgerald's with Windsor Drive, Lake Charles' Magnolia Sons, the Testyclactics (ew), Better Luck and Spain Coloured Orange

  • This Week In Beyonce: Who Dares Cover the Queen?

Not strictly a cover, just one of those things we never get tired of posting... As if Queen B weren't (Sasha) fierce enough on her own, it seems her majesty's minions - let's face it, we're all her royal peons; there isn't anyone left on Earth who hasn't heard one of her songs, or doesn't tap their foot a bit when "Single Ladies" comes on - adore their queen so much that they dare to be like her. In this case, Rocks Off is speaking of the numerous individuals who dare to cover - or remix, or ma

  • Sugarland Express real

Here, via Fox 26, is your entertaining police-chase video of the day.The station reports that HPD is investigating why it took forty patrol cars to apprehend this fiend. It was our town's own little remake of The Sugarland Express.Check it out. This truck cruises not too quickly on I-45, followed by a phalanx of cops who have all jumped on the bandwagon, either for the entertainment value or because it was better than cruising the Fifth Ward. The guy ends up the wrong way on the highway, facin

  • Lonesome Onry and Mean: Dear Local Musicians, Grammy Consideration Is Not the Same Thing As Grammy Nominations

Ah, here we go again with local artists trumpeting "Grammy nominations." The latest is Atascocita-grown country singer Susan Hickman, who seems to fancy herself as a Miranda Lambert/Martina McBride type. We stumbled across Hickman accidentally through MySpace's "Status Updates," and our eye was immediately drawn to: "Susan Hickman Up for 6 1st Round Grammy Nominations." Now Lonesome, Onry and Mean doesn't claim to know everything about what's going on around here, but we do try to keep our ear
