  • Will UH Try To Take The "UH" Out Of UH-Downtown?

    August 11, 2008
  • A UH-Downtown By Any Other Name

As we first reported back in August, UH-Downtown is trying very, very hard not to be UH-Downtown anymore. The rumored change is more or less a done deal; all that's left is to decide what the new name will be.Why give up the brand name of UH, especially as UH is embarking on an aggressive (if possibly quixotic) attempt to be one of those esteemed "Tier One" universities?Because, UHD president Max Castillo tells Hair Balls, UHD is not part of UH.

  • UH-Downtown Gets Set To Vote On World's Least Necessary Name Change

Max Castillo, president of UH-Downtown, confirmed to the Houston Chronicle what he told us last month: he really, really wants to change the name of his school. And now he's taking it online! The school has put up on its webpage a whole collection of facts, lists, criteria and suggested names for students, staff and faculty to ponder.Among the highlights: The "Current Name List" includes such winners as Seguin State University (Come again?), Texas Gulf Coast State University (Can we get more modif

This is it, people - the pivotal moment we've anticipated for weeks, nay, months. The new name for the University of Houston-Downtown is...in the final stages of being decided. UH System Chancellor Renu Khator and UH-D President Max Castillo will pass on this afternoon five tentative finalists to the UH Board of Regents. And Sue Davis, UH-D's head of public affairs, tells us those names will be made public today! Or possibly Monday. A wise man once said, "Waiting is the hardest part." The name ch

  • UH-Downtown's Max Castillo, We Hardly Blew Ye

That was some send-off the Chronicle gave over the weekend to Max Castillo, outgoing president of UH-Downtown. It was the kind of glowing profile some cynical journalists call a "blow job."In it we learned that Castillo:a) is "a bilingual Hispanic, at a time when 85 percent of college presidents are white -- [and therefore] doesn't fit the mold"b) That, somehow, we're supposed to believe the president of UH-D is a celebrity, yet Castillo remains down-to-earth: "It is less glamorous than you migh

Whether you like it or not -- and it seems most people couldn't care less -- there will be a mayoral election in two months.Your next mayor will either be the city controller (in which case Houston will be the largest city in the U.S. to elect an open gay or lesbian as mayor), a city council member (in which case Houston will be ruled by a moneyed white guy, not for the first time), a former city attorney (in which case Houston will be having Lee Brown flashbacks) or an admitted Republican (i

  • Don't Believe The Hype! The Press Mayoral Debate Is Not Only Still On, It's Already Been Broughten!!

Anti-trust lawyers began searching collusion law last night as word began to emerge that Houston's field of mayoral candidates had agreed to drastically cut back on the number of forums/debates they'd attend. Then they put the law books away, because even they agreed there were far too many mayor's-race forums, especially when you have candidates who pretty much agree on everything. But what did the announcement mean for the Houston Press/University of Houston-Downtown forum set for September 3
