You know what I love about SeptembeR, OctobeR, NovembeR and DecembeR? It's oyster season! During these months, oysters are at their peak. For the next few weeks, I'll be sampling the most memorable and tasty oyster dishes in Houston.
No. 8, Oyster Stew at Danton's Seafood Kitchen
"Hurrah," I shouted, to no one in particular, when Katharine Shilcutt named the Oyster Stew at Danton's No. 30 on her list of 100 Favorite Dishes. Born and bred a clam chowder lover, I now consider oyster stew to be my favorite type of seafood soup, and for that I thank Danton's.
Shilcutt suggests requesting the addition of tasso (ham) lest your oyster stew get "too creamy." Good advice for the 98 percent of the population that doesn't drink cream by the cupful. For me, however, nothing can be too creamy.
At Danton's you can complement your oyster stew with a side of saltine crackers; however, I recommend taking a cup to go when it's especially crispy and chilly outside and enjoying it at home with some freshly baked and buttered cornbread muffins.
Repeat a couple of times a month and you'll accumulate enough extra body fat to keep you warm through winter.
