100 Favorite Dishes 2012: No. 43, Wings and Grits at The Breakfast Klub

This year leading up to our annual Best of Houston® issue, we're counting down our 100 favorite dishes in Houston. This list comprises our favorite dishes from the last year, dishes that are essential to Houston's cultural landscape and/or dishes that any visitor (or resident) should try at least once.
Some people may tell you that waffles and wings are the way to go at The Breakfast Klub, where the line is always long and the breakfast is always delicious. But those people are wrong. I am here to tell you that it's actually the huge serving of wings and grits at The Breakfast Klub that makes up the restaurant's best breakfast platter.
But before we get to that, a word of advice: Don't let the line be a deterrent to eating at The Breakfast Klub. It goes fast most days. And even when it doesn't -- I once spent a drizzly Saturday morning waiting in line for an hour and 15 minutes -- there's always something entertaining going on to keep you occupied, whether it's watching the fashion show of Breakfast Klub guests in their finest and fanciest (I'm always the least well-dressed person by a long shot) or listening to the jokes cracked by the restaurant's line watcher (who's the elderly, female equivalent of Chris Rock) while she hands out menus and apprises first-timers of how ordering works once you get inside.
Back to the food...
The Breakfast Klub's wings are deservedly famous for being some of the most well-seasoned and well-fried chicken wings in town. But the grits often get overlooked, which is a shame -- especially considering how difficult it is to find honest, perfectly cooked grits in this town. You won't find any runny instant grits at The Breakfast Klub; they're the real thing, cooked low and slow (just like good barbecue) until they're thick and creamy, then topped with the ideal amounts of butter, salt and -- if you ask for it -- cheese. I recommend that you do.
And if you just can't resist ordering the waffles too? Well, that's why you dine with a friend.
