100 Favorite Dishes: No. 27, Captin's Fried Chicken at Zelko Bistro
This year leading up to our annual Best of Houston issue, we're counting down our 100 favorite dishes in Houston. This list comprises our favorite dishes from the last year, dishes that are essential to Houston's cultural landscape and/or dishes that any visitor (or resident) should try at least once.
Zelko Bistro is the only place in town where I'll order a fried chicken breast. Every other place in town -- even the greats, like Barbecue Inn -- I'll stick with dark meat. But the chicken breast at Zelko is plump and juicy beyond compare.
Pair that impossibly moist flesh with a crispy, barely sweet crust made with -- what else? -- Captain Crunch cereal, and you have a winning textural combination. The darkly sweet and tangy shallot jam on top keeps what could be a kitschy dish elegant, as do the tender pea shoots. I love the chicken here so much, in fact, that it's the rare restaurant where I don't fill up on the buttery mashed potatoes first.
The dish makes for a grown-up throwback meal, the family dinner vibe only enhanced by ordering a slice lemon ice box pie for dessert and grabbing a jar of preserves on your way out. Such is an evening well-spent at cozy Zelko Bistro.
