100 Favorite Dishes, No. 28: Banh Mi at Cali Sandwich

This year leading up to our annual Best of Houston issue, we're counting down our 100 favorite dishes in Houston. This list comprises our favorite dishes from the last year, dishes that are essential to Houston's cultural landscape and/or dishes that any visitor (or resident) should try at least once.

This may be a contentious choice, as I know that Cali's popularity has waned in recent years. But the hole-in-the-wall sandwich shop epitomizes what old Chinatown used to be like before it became popular to explore hole-in-the-wall Chinatown sandwich shops. It's no-nonsense, bare bones and delivers great food on the cheap.

You don't get your hand held here. But in exchange, you get inexpensive food and efficient -- if impersonal -- service, two things that I crave during a fast lunch break that doesn't involve a Subway. One banh mi will easily fill your belly and costs around $3. And the sandwiches are genuinely good, especially the chock-full-o-meat combination banh mi.

I understand that Cali uses a special recipe mayonnaise that is made on-site. That could explain the extra tanginess in its banh mi, especially when paired with the crisp strips of fresh jalapeno and bright cilantro. And there's something about the way the French bread shatters into a soft layer of pate that hits my sweet spot. But that's just me. Picking a favorite banh mi joint in Houston is like picking a favorite star in the sky.
