This year leading up to our annual Best of Houston issue, we're counting down our 100 favorite dishes in Houston. This list comprises our favorite dishes from the last year, dishes that are essential to Houston's cultural landscape and/or dishes that any visitor (or resident) should try at least once.
A little over a year and a half ago, Ruthie Miller wrote a post about the street vendor blues, stating: "Houston doesn't have the hot dog sellers, pretzel guys, or mobile pho carts." In that short amount of time, the number of food trucks in Houston has grown exponentially. There's even talk of creating a food truck court of Houston's own. Yes, Virginia, there is now a mobile pho cart. And it's terrific.
But at that time, one of the few non-taco truck mobile vendors was Melange Creperie. Buffalo Sean has been pouring crepes, rain or shine, since 2009. Barely a blogger among us hasn't been dazzled by the true-to-Paris crepes and Sean's ever-shifting array of seasonal ingredients alongside old standbys.
Whether it's a savory crepe of ham, eggs, goat cheese, cheddar and spinach, a sweet crepe of bananas and Nutella, or a combination of savory and sweet -- goat cheese and fig has been my personal favorite -- Sean knows how to pair flavors. His latest masterpieces have been a saag paneer-filled crepe and a summery kershaw melon with sweet cream and gingersnaps.
Alas, you'll have to wait until September 1 for your crepe fix. With the drought and the oppressive heat this summer, Sean and his assistants have taken the rest of the month off. Let the countdown to September begin...
