Celebrate National Farmers' Market Week Through August 7
Why, you ask? "Farmers markets are good for you for health, good for your community, and good for the economy," says Stacy Miller, executive director of the Farmers Market Coalition, a nonprofit supporting farmers' markets across the country. "During Farmers Market Week, we invite everyone to celebrate the freshest foods from America's most entrepreneurial farmers by supporting their local farmers markets."
Farmers markets support small-family farms, stimulate rural economies, and make fresh, nutritious food available to more people (often at lower prices than major retail stores). Locally grown produce available at farmers' markets is available to you at the peak of freshness and travels (on average) less than 50 miles. Compare that to "the supermarket scenario," which, in some cases, means 7-14 days and 1,200 miles have been spanned between the time produce is picked and when it becomes available at a supermarket. Studies have shown that produce begins to lose nutritional value soon after harvest; locally grown produce available at farmers' markets is available to you with higher nutritional content.
And let us not forget - nothing can take a recipe from "good" to "slap-your-momma-good" the way using fresh ingredients can.
